Does the car have air con ?, on the little vented piece just below the gauges, is anything behind that on cars with air con, some kind of sensor etc, is it anything to do with that, or for one of the missing switches on the bank of four (where the fog light switch is )?
out of interest, what colour are the wires that are connected to the plug ? looks like red, white, and something else

It comes in the same bit of loom as the green and black normally disconnected test and read memory connectors.
Yes it has aircon.
As long as it shouldn't be connected to something, but I can't see anything. There are four coloured wires from it - two at each end of the stretched "H" shape plug IYSWIM.
Just tracking some possible wiring faults, think this is a red herring.

Yep, i think it is the kick down switch
just checked my wiring diagrams, and that appears to be on the same loom as the read memory connectors, and is a black 2 pole connector

it may be the plug to diagnose the airbag system, are there also 2 black wires taped to the same bit of loom with blue tape and a bit of black tape over the end of each one? if so then thats what it is. with the ignition on you put one of the black wires in to either pin 1 or 2 can't remember off the top of my head and it will flash the airbag light just read the fault code as normal
