There's a pin that needs to be driven out....carefully (make sure you do not use a slightly too large drift tool and jam it in the damn hole....it is a bugger to get back out ).
You also need to remove the strut from the lower wishbone so you can lift the wheel and driveshaft away from the gearbox.

Ah, sorry - no idea (I'm no mechanic!). But why would you want to do this? Did your you new box come without them? I assume you'd need to split the box, but can't confirm.

Ah, see where you're coming from now James. Take it your six speed has been delivered without any stub axles in it, and you are now trying to transfer the ones out of your 5MT?
IIRC the stubs on the 5MT open diff are held in with spring clips, so it should be possible to pull them out. However, I'm not certain whether the 5MT and 6MT parts are the same (the drive shaft side obviously is, but the inside may be different).
May be less hassle to get a set of 6MT stubs from your local dealer. There was a thread on here over the last few days mentioning the part number. Can't remember the thread, but I think it was Andy F who posted the number, so hope that helps clue you in on it.

Does anyone know now if the shaft axle drive from a UK98 5MT will fit with a 6 Speed Box (2002)? Facing exactly the same problem : ( how much does an STI one cost?
And last but not least how can they be taken out/fitted???
