As in 0w/30 etc which by the way would be crap in a scooby.
i think they do a 15w/50 which would be o.k. but not ideal. Most people , me included are using a fully synthetic 10w/60 oil.
hope this helps.

Best you use another shop then!

0W40 is too thin for Subaru engines and will cause wear.

I use Castrol RS 10W60 fully synthetic.

Another popular oil on here is Motul 300v 15w/50

Nathan..

Lol, your local shop for local people is talking crap. Mobil 1 is available in three different types. The 0w/40 version is the "normal" one, then there's the Diesel, and "Motorsport" formulation.

The Motorsport one is 15w/50 viscosity and is the right stuff to use in your car, provided your engine has more than around 7,000 miles on it.

If you've already got the 0w/40 Mobil oil in your sump, and bought it on the basis that your shop said that was the only one, it might be worth going back to them and politely suggest they supply you with the correct version. The 0w formulation really is too thin unless you live in a very cold climate and only make short journeys.

"Most people"? You ran a poll? Where did you get the idea that 15w/50 is "not ideal"? It's fine for these engines, no reason why 10w/60 would be inherently "better".

There's probably no universal agreement because there are a number of oils that will do a good job, just, in fact, as there are on the engine side. No experience of the Valvoline gearbox oil, but no reason to think it won't be up to snuff. Syntrax is okay, Redline's stuff has its uses, and can help in certain situations where gearboxes run a bit rough on other oils. Silkolene Syn5 is very good, so's Mobil 1 SHC, which is what I've been using lately, and will probably carry on using. Works fine for me, but I'm sure you'll be happy with any of the suspects above.

I just bunged Mobil 1 15w/50 in mine, and toped it up with Helix Ultra or something. (had it left over, and the Mobil 1 only comes in 4ltr tubs, oh you can pay another £10 for half a Litre, maybe i should have)

A change of any kind has got to be better than leaving old oil in hasn’t it?

why Fully rather than semi or natural..

Those monkeys at halfords couldnt tell me, then i supose its like going to pc world and asking them for the best game..

That's fine, although there's probably a lesson there somewhere about not buying your oil from Halfords.

A variety of reasons. The best full synths have greater stability over a wider temperature range, higher sheer strength, etc. etc. etc. To cut a long story short full synths lubricate and protect the engine better - once it has been fully run-in.
