Hi All,

Recently aquired my first scoob, a 95 wrx type RA from. Thing is when I throttle off (in gear) I get quite loud scuffing noise (not unlike when you need new brake pads) but its not brakes. Does it in any gear only when throttle off in gear, if I take it out of gear & coast no noise, same if I dip the clutch still in gear no noise, in fact, soon as I slightly touch the clutch pedal to depress it, the noise stops. Also soon as you touch the accelerator the noise stops again! My mate reckons it could be the clutch thrust bearing. I was told the car has an uprated clutch & from past experience of fitting & using paddel clutches in my Renault 5 turbos it does feel a bit paddly on the pedal on take up. I have no bother getting the gears etc & car drives ace, just the noise when lifting off the gas & peeps can hear it as I drive by

Do I need to change the clutch thrust bearing? Is it that?
Any help appreciated.

I have the same problem on my uk 2000MY, i think it maybe bearing related.

I'm going to call my local Subaru dealer to investigate. No doubt it won't be covered by warrenty

It could be just gear noise from the diffs on the over run, a bit of backlash?

Mine does this when throttling back, not a whine but a new thrumming noise .. not a vibration or rubbing on something noise ... if you get me!

If that's all it is, not a lot you can do until you replace the gearbox/diffs if they fail, or just a bit thicker oil maybe if that's safe??

Pretty sure it's to do with the clutch/bearing (had one go years ago on a gt turbo with similair sound), it's a proper loud noise, not diffs/gearbox, I know that sound & it deffo isn't that they sound sweet. Always hard trying to describe sommet isn't it lol. I'm about 80% sure it's the thrust bearing, since I've seen on shop websites selling them to replace noisy ones on scoobs too.

Unfortunately the labour is about the worse part of a thrust bearing replacement, unless you do it yourself! May as well look at clutch cover / plate / flywheel / rear oil seal while its off and uprate 'em all at once!

That's my excuse anyway!!

Just spoken to my dealer, possible input shaft bearing/release bearing in need of replacement.
£700\650 to replace inc clutch.
