safe power on standard bugeye internals?? scooby experts opinions please
hey all, am getting my car remapped 2 weeks today with the following mods:
565cc Sti Injectors
Walboro Fuel Pump
FPR
FETD05 Turbo
full decat
STi 8 TMIC
STi panel filter
Gruppe S Headers
prodrive hoses
from what i know 350bhp shouldnt be too much of a problem in terms of reliability from the car, but i am being advised otherwise that 320bhp is the only safe limit without running risks. but then i have spoken to ninnybobs and midlife to name a few, who are comfortably running more. so could someone please tell me the realistic limits of the engine? i dont use the car THAT much, but when i go out etc or take my sons out i use it, and boot it occasionally so as above, what do you think I could comfortably run?

Your car got a 5-speed box? If so, that's the limiting factor. The 6-speed STi will take a lot more.
I'm doing a similar upgrade to you, but using a 2.5 block for a 'Phase 1' hop-up. Torque is the problem, not bhp, and from what I've read on here 300lbs/ft should be okay, and 350lbs/ft probably will not. Much depends on your driving style.
I intend to have mine mapped to about 320lbs/ft max and drive it with consideration. That will give me around 350bhp, I reckon. I will also turn down the boost for track days as everything inevitably takes a thrashing then
Good luck,
Richard.

Absolutley, your engine will be fine (disclaimer: my personal opinion if mapped and serviced correctly) upto 350 HP but your 5 speed gearbox may struggle. APS do a drop in kit that upgrades the box to cope with th extra torque or buy a secondhand 6 speed.

Hoppy beat me to it It's the mid range torque and not the high end BHP that's the problem for the bugeye.
I run 282 lbs/ft torque on 325 BHP (maped by Bob Rawle) to keep within the envelope that the bugeye gearbox and internals can cope with
But....I have to run it every day for at least the next 3 years.
300lbs/ft torque on 330+ BHP seems to be the upper limit at the moment but I seem to recall Harvey on Tyne Tees Scoobies completely wrecked his gearbox at 290 lbs/ft
Hmmmm
Midlife.....

Yes, there are quite a few sorry tales of gearboxes giving up at relatively low torque, and also some boxes that appear to be okay with a lot more. But how long for?
My figure of 320lbs/ft is purely a guess and has a lot to do with the way I drive - I try not to bang it through the gears. I am also mentally prepared for the thing to tear itself to pieces and am in the process of buying a run-about for my daughter that will also get me to work if I'm off the road
For a reliable daily driver, I think Midlife's numbers are the way to go. If you can pick up a 6-speed box for the right money, grab it
Richard.
