Default Clonking on steering

HI guys,

Noticed a bit of knocking from the steering during normal driving, when stationary if I wobble the wheel side to side there is a lot of clunking and some slack, Have jacked the car up and checked the wheel bearings, track rod ends power steering fluid and they are fine, now thinking it may be a driveshaft as there is also some vibration whilst driving.

any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi

I get this sometimes, it comes and goes. I have had the car up with both front wheels off the gronud and can't get it to do it.

At the minute I'm putting it down to the steering "knuckles" ( joints that connect steering column to the rack) rubbing shoulders. I greased them up yesterday to see if it happens again.

hope this helps

Regards

Alan

What car?
If it's WRX MY03 then most of them have plastic boots on steering shafts that make a light similar noise with that you describe when the boot compressed during left-right turns at low speeds or stationary.

I found that problem on mine, jacked it up and couldnt find out what was loose. One day I spotted the main bolt through the wishbone (holding the wishbone to chassis) had come loose and was sticking out! I tightened it up and hey presto! no more problems. UK classic MY97
