If I havent misunderstoof you...

dont think they're a gimmick, which drain plug.

I have seen in an old gearbox, fillings attracted to the magnet even after >100,000kms of use. So it does help capture the lose stuff.

I actually thought there was a magnet in the sump and in the gearbox somewhere specifically for this purpose on ALL cars. Might be wrong though

If you want aftermarket kit like this, there are some magnets that stick on the outside of the oil filter to keep the metal bits in there! No idea if they work ... found them on some scooby web site!

A magnetic plug on the gearbox will attract slivers of metal/filings from worn gears as the box casing is aluminium alloy and so not magnetic.
Now the engine sump is steel and the sump plug is steel so you can magnetise the sump plug which magnetises the sump so goodness knows where any filings end up. Next time I see some shells I will also check if they are magnetic.
I think that on balance there is nothing to loose if the sump is magnetised as any metalic item may be arrested before it goes further.

As said the gearbox and rear diff have them.

I do not think you will gain anything with using one in the engine sump as the oil is changed more frequently and the filter will catch anything or it will drop out of the oil into the sump anyway.

The diff and gearbox have no filter etc as it just sits in the oil rather than it being pumped about hence the magnetic plugs.
