Lightbulb Difference between Sti 5 & Sti V6 engine

Hi all
Wonderwhat the differences are between the Sti 5 & Sti 6 engine unit? Are there any? Is there any more likely hood of an engine to go pop on one or the other?
Cheers

I don't know of the physical differences but, when I was looking for a Type R I was advised by several tuners that the V5 engine was weaker and, hence, to go for either a V4 or V6. I don't know how true this is but I heard it from at least 2 sources.

I wouldn't say a V4 is stronger! It suffered from piston slap.

Bob, did they revise the ECU to a safer map on the V6 STi as per the Uk car?

The suspicion is that they didn't understand the blow ups were MAF related and revised the ECU to be a bit safer as they thought the problem lay there. Hence UK MY00 owners tend to fit MY99 AE801 ECU's... My thoughts anyway!

The STi 5 & 6 engines are the same mechanically. Cannot comment on the ECU or map other than limited edition STi 6 had slightly more power, apparently, from published figures.
Given the choice I would have the STi 5 or 6 engine over the STi 4, every time.
Biggest difference I can think of is a switch on the clutch on the 6 which the 5 does not have.

Isn't it wonderful how these stories start? The number of ones l hear from peoples whose mates have heard.....................

a/ The electric centre diff breaks the engine because when the drive is transmitted to the front it strains the end of the crank.

b/ The clutch pulls instead of pushes and pulls the end off the crank.

AND so-on

Yes 97 /98 years suffer piston slap, but otherwise Vers 3, 4, 5, 6 have really only cosmetic differences. V3,4 shallow piston crown bowls and thick head gaskets. V5,6 deep piston crown bowls and thin head gaskets, V3,4 centre thrust bearings on the crank, V5,6 rear thrust bearings on crank. V3,4 piston height from pin to crown differs to crown height of V5,6. Fit the wrong ones or fit the wrong head gaskets and you'll have either low compression OR pistons hitting the heads.

No real innovation or important difference unless you don't really know and mix all the bits up....................
