Samco induction hose collapsing.
Had a remap today with Bob Rawle after adding a few mods, every thing was fine until we started to do the high rpm work when at 6k rpm the car would not rev any more, so we had a quick look and could see the apexi cone filtter had distorted thinking this was the cause of the restricsion we changed it for a hks mushroom filtter and went out again but the same thing happened,
We now belive it to be the samco induction hose collapsing under hi boost, has anyone had this problem and could you tell me how you solved it or is it a case of getting rid of the samco and replace it, but with what?

This problem existed previously on Samco induction kits. There were several reports on here, perhaps 2 yrs ago or more. I had a Samco induction kit that I returned for a refund for other quality issues before I even used it. I think Bob would have been well aware of these problems at the time. As I heard no more and have seen several Samco inlet tracts in use I assumed the problems had been resolved.
At the time I first heard of the problems of colapsing I wondered if the air filters were not large enough, clogged or otherwise restrictive, thus causing a vacum. Obviously that is a BAD thing in an inlet tract. As you have tried two different filters it is unlikely to be the filter.
What power do you think you are running?
I may have a suitable inlet tract system that was previously on my STi 6 Wagon if it will fit physically. It is only suitable for use without a MAF sensor.
Let me know if you need more info or want a photo.
If you do not get more info on here try 22b.com as I think several posters on there had that experience and it would be best to hear from them direct.

As a result of the pipe collapsing it managed to dislodge the alloy insert from the end of the samco inlet hose ( No wounder when i got home it was idling like a dog)

I do agree with Andy we have the original airbox pipe going to our samco hose and you have only got to pull it slightly and it just comes off.
Its only on whilst the engines running in then its coming of to be mapped without the maf and another samco hose leading to the (RCM) air filter.

I think that we had both issues, to start with the car hit a brick wall at 6k, progressive runs then saw this move back to circa 5.4k, replacing the filter moved it back to 6k, its defo collapsing, same problem as I saw on Christians car and a couple of others. The samco was so weak you could push it in with gentle finger pressure.
Also had a problem on the first car yesterday, some one had installed a digital lambda link for the owner, problem was he wired the signal feed to the lambda meter to the crank sensor ecu input ... ffs what a thing to do, clearly not checked properly, results was a car that would have been misfiring like a goodun, I suspect the only thing that saved the engine was the fact that a TD05/06 turbo had also been installed so it was being driven gently off boost, scragged a set of plugs though and caused alot more grief tracking it down.
So to anyone installing this sort of kit that interfaces with the ecu ... make sure you are connecting to what you think you are, don't just guess.

Andy the hose was pushed on ot the samco by at least 25/30mm more than enought for the jubilee clip to bite into, as the photo shows.

The photo was taken before i'd finnished and i was making sure everything fitted as it should, theres clips on it now,

The insert only goes 20/25mm inside the hose and has a flange on the end to stop it going any further.

Perhaps you bought a pipe that has been sitting in stock for a long time?
A quick fix could be to put a jubilee clip around the collapsing section to reinforce it (obviously don't do it up too tight)?

But the ribs are attatched to the submarine, as the silicone is that soft it will still suck inwards with something round it unless it is attatched to the pipe all eth way round.

It does work actually, for one part to pull in, another part has to move out slightly, the jub clip stops this happening.
It only really works on the round sections, not the oval bit

The theory behind the jubilee clip idea is that when the pipe collapses it goes oval then flat, so it collapses in one direction but gets wider in the opposite direction. The jubilee clip is supposed to stop it from being able to get wider in any direction, which in turn helps to support it against collapsing.
I'm very dubious as to whether it will have any more than a pretty minimal effect though.

It's not meant to be a complete solution but if the intake pipe is just on the verge of collapsing then this method may stop it. If you up the boost further then another pipe is best. It still works on the oval sections but only if you make them round with the jubilee clip pressure!
