New Clutch for MY98

New Clutch for MY98
I have a feeling my Clutch is on its way out, so i thought id start looking into this before its too late..
Though my car has only just over 65K on the clock and the clutch was changed by the previous owner now 25K miles ago it would seem its on its way out.
What clutch is recomended for a UK spec Scooby pushing 350bhp?
What cost are involved....?

The standard clutch from Subaru will cope with 350bhp no problem, I drag raced one with a bit more power than that for a season and it was still fine after it.

My MY98 clutch showed no signed of any problems with ~48K on it until I fitted my FMIC, I went out to remap it and on the second pull through 3rd gear the clutch let go at about 3500rpm. The old plate had plenty of material left when it came off but looked quite well polished
Fitted an AP Organic immediately and no problems since.

Just checked, the previous owner had a AP Clutch fitted. The car since has done 15,000 miles!!
I get a judder everytime i stop and start at lights, could also be the flywheel..
but budgets little low at the moment due to my recent fmic updrage..
Just poping by to Mr Clutch now to see if they can identify the issue..

I would not replace the clutch. You can remove the small rubber plug from the top of the block and visually inspect the plate to see what thickness is left.
The judder may be cureable with just a new or skimmed flywheel and/or some "persuasive" bedding in of the current clutch.

DON'T GO TO MR CLUTCH _ EVER !! You would regret it forever, they will fit some parts of a homemade Czechoslovakian copy-clutch that they bought for ninepence in a car boot sale in Romania.
Then when it fails it will be your fault - I once interviewed ex members of staff from Mr Clutch depots in london for a position we were offering and they told me ALL the tales.

Sam - read the advise given. does the clutch really need replacing ?
they just 'say' it does. they have probably never seen an impreza in their life before.
i would try and find a Subaru / performance mechanic somewhere local - even if you have to travel 50+ miles. Ask on here for someone local to you. someone who knows what they are looking at.

My MY98 UK clutch lasted to 82k miles!
Rang the dealer for a quote and filled my pants
Rang Scoobyclinic who quoted for a semi uprated clutch with re con flywheel for an amazing price! Try them, you won't be disappointed
Oh and re the judder, just give it some more revs when you pull off
Cheers

Ive got a Helix Sports Clutch.. I run 279 bhp on a 1994 RA.. it on its way out right now. Its only done only 21k . It slips in 5th and the whole car shudders and shakes - getting it changed in January.
I was going to go for an AP Racing clutch but after what I have read I think I will just bung a standard one in.
I have only launched car twice, so definately would not recommend this clutch, mabey its a one off and I got a faulty one, who knows /shrug.
Cheers

You could just change the AP friction plate for about £130 and release bearing £80. My clutch let and I rang AP direct to ask advice. They want to look at the clutch to see if it's a "manufactoring problem". I'm hoping it is and they will replace it. I've had my AP for 18 months and said I'd been sprinting the car, but they still want to look at. It would be worth mentioning the mileage.

Guys have to bring this to the top again....
Now my car judders when I drop to 2nd and 3rd gear...also getting little vibration from the peddle itself when stationary and I rest my foot on the clutch... Judder from stationary has just gotten worse..everything in the car shakes..
Just had a chat with AP Racing http://www.apracing.com/info/contact.htm
They said that replacing the clutch for another would be recommend as for the time that will be spent in taking it out etc...I would also need a release bearing as well as the obvious flywheel skimming!
No disrespect to the mobile fitters, but what's the benefit of me having the clutch fitted from a dealer of some sort rather then a mobile fitter...? (if any)
Is there a benefit of me having a lightened flywheel over having the existing one skimmed? (my car is used for road use)
So i have 2 options avaliable....
OPTION 1
AP racing Clutch Kit : £375 + vat
Release Bearing: £60 + vat
Lightened Flywheel (2nd hand): £150 + vat
Fitting: £x (depends on the fitter)
OPTION 2
ScoobyClinic Uprated Clutch @ £475 + vat
Release Bearing: £60 + vat
Fitting: £0
Lightened FlyWheel (2nd hand) £150 + Vat
Other Options invited....

Give David at APi a shout his post on first page. He is based 30mins closer to you than Scooby clinic (South East Warwick just off M40).
Also shop around as you will find you can knock off a few quid from those prices you quoted.
Clutch and bearing £393 incl VAT.
Phone Mark directly I am sure he will match the SN offer price if you ask nicely .
At the end of the day a Clutch and flywheel isnt cheap for a Scoob of your power!

Sam I would let someone who changes 4wd clutches on a regular basis do this as its a very involved job.
With the power you are currently running, skimming the flywheel will certainly help the next clutch be smoother in action.

Benefit of Garage fitters (to show i am not biassed): Stock of parts if anything extra is needed...(that extra bolt when halfords is shut ) Dry for Fitter ... Looks good on your service book if an authorised or well known garage carries out work (not so sure with clutch fitting as it goes, but deffo looks better for servicing)...
Both have benefits IMHO but different benefits..
IMO you cant go wrong with the scoobyclinic deal, i would ask you to take one bit of advice though Sam, DO NOT! fit a paddle clutch! it is not needed for your application and will make your daily drive less enjoyable.
Rob
p.s. havent actually got time to do any clutch stuff at the moment but would be happy to advise where not to go

After all your recent mods, what power / torque did you produce ( missed that if it's in earlier posts! ).
Your problem sounds like the flywheel is now uneven, with high spots on it.
Get it replaced - another std flywheel skimmed and lightened to around 8 kg ( £20 2nd hand, around £100 to skim and lighten is what I paid ) and then get it fitted. Then you can / the mechanics can look at the clutch friction plate and pressure plate and advise the damage / chance of more judder. If you leave it, you may well ruin the clutch assay too, as I did!
ASPerformance do an exchange on flywheels.

Thanks for all the input, though the clutch again has been put on hold...
