Clutch Slipping

Clutch Slipping
If I put MY99 RB5 Prodrive in 4th or 5th and accelerate hard from about 2500 rpm the clutch slips.
1.) Car has done 68,000 miles so I expect a new clutch is required but I wanted to check whether there is any adjustment on it?
2.) Assuming there isn't and I need a new clutch, what clutch should I purchase? (I have not made any additional mods to the car). I imagine there is probably a cheaper and better alternative to the Subaru clutch that is in place?
Any input appreciated.
Cheers

when I had my fairly std. car clutch go at about 260/70 bhp I replaced it with a borg and beck item and it was superb, best bit, I think theyre only £117.50 delivered with a release bearing.....
have replaced now with an exedy unit for 300+

Thanks Peanuts,
Is there a direct website for borg and beck? I just looked on one that sold borg and beck clutches and they didn't seem to do a clutch for 96 - 00.
Cheers

Yes
http://www.autospares-group.com/ but you need to ring them as they no longer list it but believe they still sell it.
33,000miles on mine and no judder on the same flywheel that the subaru one juddered on and I didn;t skim it!!
For fitting you are looking at about £150 for a good honest job. It is not that bad a job though, I did mine myself, there is a thread that was about yesterday with advise in and mine is around somewhere too

If you've ever had any clutch judder however it's worth getting the flywheel reskimmed at the same time, it shouldnt cost much and wont be difficult to get done whilst its all apart, as it's a simple job for any competent machine shop.
Borg and Beck are a good choice for a standard car.
Cost wise I'd certainly budget more than £150 for labour (although I know somewhere like API start off at only £150 if you go for one of their clutches) most other places it'll be over £200+ easily.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try and get a borg and beck clutch, I very rarely
experience any juddering so not sure the fly wheel needs skimming.
As for doing it myself normally I would consider it but I've just spent my whole xmas hols gutting and replacing my bathroom suite and I'm still not finished so I'm a bit DIY'd out at the moment!
Cheers.

Has anybody fitted a borg and beck clutch kit to a post '96 Impreza? I have just rung Cafco who didn't have it in their book!
They have just rung back and said they can get one in for £184 though!

Sam,
See earlier in the post, they come highly recommended. I also had a look at their website http://www.delphiauto.co.uk/DELproductspages394.asp So I'll try it out, I'll post on here if I have any problems with it.

Sam, mine was all good baby.
Stefen runs about 320 through one I believe, Simon has about 330 as said.
I got one delivered and fitted for a total of £250 less a few coppers (they used to be £100 incl. VAT but went up when they became popular)

Just getting some quotes at the moment should be somewhere between 150 and 250 depending on the garage. Local garage I used to use years ago just turned me down, not the sort of job they normally do apparently!

Borg & Beck
Hello Ian and other SCooby fanatics,
How is the Borg & Beck performing?
I have a MY99 Impreza GT Turbo GC8, which also needs clutch replacement.
Probably I'm also choosing for the B&B, but have a few questions.
How much Horsepower and Torque can it handle?
How big is the plate in diameter and how big is a standard one?
Will it fit a GC8?
I'n able to buy a complete kit (bearings, plate and pressuregroup).
Thing costs 135 pounds.....
By the way, is Borg&Beck the same as Exedy?
With regards
Hans

Mine has done 35,000miles and had upto about 330bhp.. but not dyno'd it so only an estimate.. also done about 5000miles of towing and no problems.
The only time it juddered was with a big trailer on the back but that wore off as soon as it was not towing another car on a trailer.. lol
Identical to the OE clutch in size and mine is a GF8 (classic wagon)

Ian Wales, this has started to happen to me in my P1. Its almost done similar mileage.
As with you, if i accelerate hard in 4th or 5th, it starts slipping for a second or two, then it picks up like normal.
I am in two minds what to go for as a replacement!
How long could i limp around for as have insurance to pay for this month!
Would ideally like to wait a while longer before having to replace it!

I managed 2000 motorway miles when my was slipping but I was doing upto 1000miles a week at the time. I just drove off boost. it was slipping in 5th, 4th and 3rd by the time I changed it, and worn so the studs were level with the surface on the friction plate.

In response
a - Very well I think it transmits the power better than the original clutch ( but maybe thats just because it was slipping)
b - They are only rated to around 210 - 220 BHP allegedly but as you can see from this thread they cope with more than that.
c - don't know didn't measure it
d - Yes mine is a GC8 - they only do one for GC8
e - mine cost about £120 so that sounds a reasonable price
f - they are not the same as far as I know but the plate on mine was stamped with exedy so I'm not sure.
