Question Clunky diff - any ideas?

If anyone can unravel this one I would be grateful and impressed.

I have a fairly new (1000 miles) 05 Sti. After a good run, say 70 - 100 miles and most noticeably on A's and B's rather than Motorways a rattle starts from the rear. It's like loose top mounts although heavier. This is very noticeable at low speeds 15- 30 but the most disturbing part is the noise, from, I assume the rear diff, at parking/manouvering speed, like a graunchy, cracking noise and the car literally lurches sideways. This is with the diff in auto - I would expect noises with it locked. Everything has been checked for tightness.

Ideas on a postcard or A4 if necessary.

Thanks for the reply. I was told the same but couldn't believe it. Anyway I'm very happy with everything else- goes pretty well so who cares about making funny noises whilst hopping into parking spaces!
