Question Crunching 3rd/4th Synchro ??

Any advise, My Scooby 99 on a V plate WRX STi version 6 blah blah, has developed a crunching when changing gears between 3rd and 4th, only does it on hard(ish) acceleration, not driving like a woman(like the wife does). Local Subaru garage tells me its the synchro mesh between 3rd and 4th, and its gonna cost between £500 and a grand. Anyone else had these crunches on a scooby, is it a common fault, the cars only done 42000 miles.Garage tells me its safe to carry on driving, but sooner rather than later to get it fixed would be good.

Any ideas

Quite a common problem, scoobs have the highest warranty claims for gearboxes according to used car buyer

Common problem, especially when the oil is hot.
What oil are you using?
An oil change MAY help the situation.
Either live with it, which is not hard to do or get the synchros changed.
A specialist gearbox builder will charge a lot less than the dealer, around here, John Pye would charge £150 plus VAT for box out, opened and back in plus bits. These could be anything from from £200- £400 although they may have some second hand bits in stock.
Where are you located?

buy a six speeder. i can assure synchro hubs in the six speeders can suffer the same fate. i should know my 4th gear synchro hub had to be replaced and it was not cheap.
am i the only person to have fcuked a synchro hub from a jdm 6 speed?
