I think i need to replace the fuel pump - car is on the original pump at 115,000 miles and I'm starting to feel some hesitation between 4 and 5,000rpm which I'm reliably informed means the pump isn't working as well as it should.

Would it be possible to replace it with a 2nd hand pump from a new age model from somewhere like Grade A breakers or are the pumps different?

Also, is it a straight forward DIY job?

Hi who has told you its the fuel pump ?
and why would it only fault at between 4 and 5000 rpm
surley it would be more likley to be the fuel pressure regulator if it is anything to do with the fuel system
the pump is easy to remove remove the rear seat squab and os oval plate remove nuts holding pump after removing pipes and electrical connectors ( disconnect battery first ) then remove pump taking care not to force it lift and twist

When I was having my suspension done at TSL we were discussing the age/mileage of the car and they mentioned that the pump can loose performance and a key indicator is the 4 to 5000rpm problem. The pump fails to deliver sufficient fuel then the engne can go bang - in extreme cases/high speed/full throttle situations.

i wouldnt have thought that the flow rate of the pump would drop to a point that it would effect it still more likely to be a pressure problem if it is the fuel its not a 99my by any chance is it ?

It is a MY99 (RB5) - is there any way of testing a pump or is it just a case of replacing it and hoping it cures the problem?

i sure that the only way to test the pump is to T into the fuel line next to the fuel filter and check the pressure readings under load making sure that you have no leaks you would be looking for a drop of pressur at around the problem RPM

I'm starting to think it might be the MAF now? Getting uneven idle although not all the time and generally hesitant running through the rev range but again not all the time. Any ideas?
