Gearbox/engine mounts?
Did a sprint yesterday which included 4 hairpin turns, 2 of each hand. All were taken with 2nd gear selected and on each exit when ready to plant the throttle, all I had was neutral. On the last run I had to keep hold of the gear lever and it was fine, didn't feel like it was trying to jump out of gear so don't suspect a problem with the box.
I do suspect the mountings of either the engine or box or both need a bit of attention. Any suggestions as to what the replacements should be? I saw a post somewhere with uprated mounts and a suggestion of fitting a loose bolt to prevent too much movement.
This is a daily driver & fun car.

I think he does them also, but i don't have them.
I've seen the standard engine mounts split in half before - cracked straight through the rubber

The STi ones have more rubber, check e-bay for a price guide. I also seen one of the import companies selling a complete mounting kit from www.hardrace.com
I have a solid alloy gearbox mount, it looks nice not used the car in anger yet

I got the STi ones from Xtreme Scoobies, think around £50 for gearbox mount, £30 each ?? for engine mounts.
More metal, stronger, slight design changes and lots more and harder rubber. No real difference in harshness or vibration since!

Could weak mounts be the cause of dropping out of gear under hard cornering? Or could there be something else contributing to it?
Suppose the thing to do is change the lot and see if it still occurs.

Did the car jump out of gear as you booted it ... sounds like selector forks or syncro,
If jumped out just by chucking the car about then is more likely to be gearbox movement, or even more so the linkage getting banged as the 'box moves, in which case the new STi harder mounts may well help. There are some other bits to stiffen the linkage and gearbox area, I saw them on the Ravensblade site ( USA web pages ) which improve shift and firm things up.

I had a gearbox fault, years ago, where the selector was worn on 3rd. That was a definite dislike of being in the gear and would fight against being held in with the gear lever. It would jump out at the slightest loading.
Sunday was quite different, once 2nd was selected, it took the power without any complaint, it was exiting each hairpin (180 round a cone) that it was in neutral. Last run was fine with me holding the lever, there was no fighting it, just gentle pressure (if that's possible with an adrenelin rush )
There's no mad rush to buy the first thing as the next round is a couple of months away. It's fine on the road and goes on track in a couple of weeks. If it happens on track, I'll be less pumped up and maybe determine under what circumstances it's happening.

Gerry, my Sti does/did that. I've been through the 'process' you are now thinking.
It only occures in one bend of all the hill climbs I do!
As I approach, flat out in 3rd @ 6500 ( ) come hard off the gas, pounce on the brakes, come to change from 3rd to 2nd, do just that and end up with 8000 rpm in neutral...
Once I'm off the grass, pop into 2nd and finish 3rd in class
I am sure it is the unwinding of the mounts as you lift off. Now i simply change slower and far more forcefully to ensure the lever actually crosses the gate. All is well from that day on. (sometimes first in class, or 2nd, but never 3rd again!)

I'll take a look at the mounts to see what they're like, condition, movement, etc. But at the prices mentioned, I'll probably replace them anyway.
Sunday was 2 practice and FOUR timed runs so I'll have plenty of opportunity at the next one to tell if there's any difference.

Had the same problem at Lydden on a tight Lt hand uphill bend kept missing 3rd and finding 5th! (No I was not changing gear mid corner). Only ever a problem on the track and I'm sure it was down to the engine and gearbox mount. When you look at the standard ones, very little rubber on the GBox mount.

Did you try Xtreme yet?
I was thinking about uprated mounts yesterday (wierd) because my engine seems to rock noticeably with the extra grunt I have. It never worried me before but seems very heavy, maybe even violent now.

If you translate $ to £ as equal, as Graham suggests, then you're better off sticking with Xtreme or Lateral. Both incredibly helpful guys and who the hell you pick I don't know Knowlesy (sp) at Xtreme was actually trying to talk me out of buying anything as he wasn't convinced that the mounts would cause the problem. He's up for a g/b BTW. Didn't get round to asking Mark.
I suppose it would be unethical to post their prices without talking further, but suffice to say, both are well under the £240 + VAT quoted earlier by a lot

No because I've learnt to 'drive' around the issue, but in the heat of the action (a relative term for me) to miss a gear is fatal on the time runs as you know. You can loose even more than a second by a missed gear, so this is a bit of insurance really.
If we could get them from a UK supply so much the better/easier.
Lets wait for a calmer period (does that exist in today's world?).

I've got the prodrive group N gearbox mount and Group N engine mounts on mine.
All purchased from Mark @ Lateral.
I still miss downchanges on tight corners..
Thought it might have been my lack of talent to start with but 4 laps later at Coombe it showed up on the same corner every time.
Have not yet worked out how to "drive round it" yet......

No it's so silent you would not realise the engine was running
But may be that's because I don't have an engine fitted
Only time will tell.
