When i drive the car there is no usual humming that i normally associate with a knackered bearing.

What i do get though is some squealing from my brake disk making contact with something on the drivers side.

The pads have been replaced so they can be ruled out.

So today i investigated the problem. When i jacked the drivers front up and gripped the wheel i noticed there is some play (And there isn't any when i do the same with the passenger side) when wobbled top to bottom.

I stuck my head behind the hub whilst rocking the wheel and noticed the cv joint rocking in sequence with the wheel and no other parts were moving.

So, I'm about 95% sure that my front bearing has gone but am a bit bemused how it has not started groaning at me yet. Is this because i've caught it early?

Could it be the bottom ball joint even though it didnt seem to have any play in it?

Anyway, could someone please give me there opinion.

It does sound like the bearing, have you noticed a slightly longer brake pedal than it used to be, also you might get a very slight pull under braking to the side that's not gone....

is the driveshaft nut tight? if so probably the bearing race has broken up

I actually wondered wether it might be the nut not tight, mayeb try that as a first step, but as stated, if it is/was n't tight, the bearing may well be fubbared anyway...

The nut is tight lads.

Gonna need a nice bit of scaffold on the end of my breaker bar to get it off anyway, just waiting till av got someone to jump in the car and hold the brakes for me. ( As i didnt the other day)

go with the bearing then you'll need a press though if your going to do it yourself you could bash the old one out with a hammer but you don't want to bash the new one in.

Whilst you have the hub off change the bottom ball joint as well, cheap as chips from main dealers (yes i was shocked as well !!!) and a piece of p!ss to change.
Did this on my MY99 i was very supprised at the amount of movement in the "old" ball joint.

hey get this sorted sooner rather than later as iv,e seen the scoob nipping the end off the cv joint resulting in a sharp turn to the bad bearing side no control when his happens. scary if it happens to you!!!!

Sounds like the bearing. I had a similar problem with mine. Turned out the hub was knackered as well. That wasn't cheap! All in fairly easy to do if you've done that kind of thing before.
