2nd gear noisy when driving (sti imprezza type ra)

as of today there seems to be a starnge whirring/whining noise coming from the car whilst driving in 2nd gear until i change into an alternative gear this is only happening in 2nd gear , no other gears. please advise if you know what this could be ! thanks
