Yep, this can be fitted - i did no problem.

Then i started reading scoobynet and got scared about the poor running, and found out about the reason why i was getting the cool 2 foot flames out the exhaust, and why it was terrible for the engine....

So i took it off and sold it to a mate with a cossie.

If all you are after is the noise, and lets face it, thats what 99% of dump valves are used for, try fitting an induction kit - it allows you to here the standard dump valve, which is suprisingly load.

Do a search in this forum and you will find all the pros and mostly cons about dump valves.

how was the dump valve damaging the engine?

The dump valve effects how the engine runs because it is letting air out of the (closed loop)system, which has already passed the air flow meter, and should be recirculating.

So the computer thinks there is more air in the system than there actually is, so the the car runs very lean (momentarily)because there is not enough air to burn the fuel thats there - so then the unburnt fuel gets chucked out the exhaust, and ignites on the exhaust cos the pops and sometimes bad (cool!) flames.

Thats what I seem to remember from previous posts by other people (sound of buck being passed.. ).

I don't know how much of a real problem this is for an ordinary scooby, but at the time I was preparing for some upgrades which could have made any problem worse, plus it was a little bit too much fun in town, as you would floor it in second, just so you could lift off and make it go "tshooo" just as you pass someone. Trouble with that was I ended up getting up to 45mph in 30 zones then attracting attention....

Gareth, it doesnt make it run lean. Quite the oposite, it makes it run rich. Because the air is vented out, and not back past the sensor, it thicks its going lean, so pumps more fuel in. Ala. LARGE FLAMES, low mpg.

This is the case, unless you are running something like link, motec or pectel. They dont read this sensor, so it can be removed.

Hi Danny
Thank you for your reply, and back to my original quenstion. Can I fit this Dump Valve? Flames sound cool,(so long as they remain outside) and I think I could handle the mpg drop.

Chaz, yes you should be able to. It should take about 10-15 mins.

Danny,

thanks for correcting me on that. I knew it was one or the other, but remembered wrong. I thought the lean could be used to describe both lack of air or lack of fuel.

Chaz,

You probably will not notice the mpg drop, unless your one of these people who constantly monitor it, as the difference is pretty small. Unless of course your doing the constant speed up/slow down manoveure I mentioned above.

Cool

i had a piston dump valve, it lasted for about two weeks then i took it of.....the wooshing every 20 seconds did my nut in, and it didnt run as smoothly as it does with the standard one, the ecu was having to work hard to keep it alive sometimes.

however they do sound good if you get the right one, ive had a look at the one grahame goode sell for the scooby, its £150 but i think it gives the same sound as the WRC car, but dont quote me...i'dont suppose anyones got one fitted???

anyway it only took me 15 mins to put on and about 10 mins to take off

You could always try an APS blow off valve - recirculating at low boost, atmospheric at high boost - best of both worlds - drop me a mail if you wanna know where to get them - i know a GREAT place

Craig H,
I'm sure you do. Don't feel shy about naming company names because, after all, NAM do pay for a banner on the BBS!!!

All fun aside, what are the specs for this Dump valve of your and what wre you(NAM) selling them for?

Thanx

Thumbs up

Chaps, I like many others, fully endorse the APS (recirc@lowboost/atmos@highboost) BOV. Historically, I have detested the noise that the atmos dump valves usually make, but this baby is not as intrusive.
It sounds like an AIR GUN shot or a brown paper bag pop. I actually like it and I am pushing 30 with grey hairs

CraigH@NAM, good piece of kit and thanks for the speedy delivery.
Don't bother with the replacement cannot be arsed to get me hands mucky this week
Keep up the good lineup of products.

Jacko.
