you havent had your clutch replaced have you??
When I did my clutch... like a muppet I trapped the cable between the block and the gearbox housing... for some strange reason it didnt like that too much... the wire runs from the knock sensor back right of engine near bottom right corner of intercooler accross the engine and into the car on left hand side...
I think they are £80 from subaru... My friendly dealers lent me one to test mine with! however I got quoted about £25 from Grade A..

I reckon the engine would be down on power, the ecu should run the engine in safe mode, if it's lacking the ability to detect knock.
Mind you these are just loosely based muppety theories...

I had a 22 come up on my MY94 recently
(shortly after resetting the ECU, and clearing out old saved codes, but that was a co-incidence)
It happened after pulling out of a filling station
I'm sure it was just a spurious knock that somehow trigged it, as the car is running fine.
The check engine light went off the next day, but occasionally comes on briefly (usually at low speed or when reversing), presumably to remind me to check it out and clear the ECU ?
Can still do >4500rpm on the occasions when the light is on, which also indicates it is just a reminder warning rather than a something has gone wrong and is still wrong
(which would limit me to 4500 rpm)
Will update you after I re-read the ECU and clear it out again
