Hello,

My car has just been for the mot and failed on emissions... He said it could be the cats or the lambda sensor... what are the chances of both cats failing... Is it more likely to be the lambda... doing a search as revealed that i should be getting 0.4 to 0.5v.. Suppose I should go get the scope stuck on it... Anybody know which wires to test. Car is a 94uk 5dr turbo... Three wires if I remember correctly...

Hope to god its not the cats as I was going to decat it...

I also read about cleaning them... but I doubt this works???

How much are replacement sensors?? oem or aftetmarket..

Change the lambda use a UK version, ie short lead. Had the same problem on mine.

I believe the lambda sensor is mounted in the headers on the early cars, and a sensor with a short lead won't reach. Unfortunately, the OEM sensor with the long lead is expensive. After market sensors don't last very long on our cars, and would also need the wiring to be extended.

Alternative:

If you are going to decat the system, and change the downpipe, move the sensor to the position used by the later cars. This is at the top of the d/p, where it runs much cooler, and is more reliable. Then you can use the cheaper short lead UK sensor.

my sensor has a short lead... 5cm or so... and mounts within very close reach of the turbo.. got a call in to subaru for a price..

Would this cause a loss in power, as I thought the car would be a lot quicker..

My 95 WRX failed on emmissions only a couple of weeks ago and turned out to be the centred cat fooked.

Had to borrow a friend's RB5 to get me through. Apparently if you bang the CAT with something you can hear it rattle inside if the honeycomb structure has collapsed. Got a decat centre refitted

It think "nickwrx" had one fail on lambda recently - have a look through drivetrain for his thread.

david,
my 95 wrx scooby failed on the c.o recently , the results were 0.67 on the c.o fast idle.
All i did is clean the lambda (which did nothing) and then i did a ecu reset and took the car back for a retest a week later and it passed ,but only just .
I told the garage i had just spent £300.00 on a new lambda sensor ( abit of a fib ).
Before you go to the test centre you should give the car a good thrashing .

Dont worry i gave the car a good thrashing... the tester is ok with me, use them for all my cars as they just do mot's and not work, they are quite strict as well which is good. I left it running for about 20mins and tried everything he could to get it to pass...

Going to buy a new lambda..
