Red face

I read an article in the newspaper today which said that the Government is planning to introduce a roadside laser/camera system which can measure the emissions coming out of your car and tell whether or not they are legal!

There is a camera which takes a photo of your numberplate and if your emissions are not within the legal limit you will get sent a £65 fine!!!

This system also measures the speed of your car for "verification" purposes! But I guess you will get an additional fine for speeding if you are over the limit.

This appears to be a good way for getting around the argument for only putting speed cameras in accident blackspots. The new system can be justified on the grounds that it is first and foremost for measuring emissions.

What does this mean for everyone with exhaust systems without a cat, will they all fail? Does anyone know anything more about this?

I am beginning to consider emigration as a plausible option!

Wink

So if I drive by at 155mph then I might be going fast enough that the emissions will be in France before the camera takes the picture and I will be beyond the trap for the picture?

Not April Fools Day!

Apparently the system has already been tested in some areas and may be introduced fairly soon!

'tis poo, I recon.
How can a laser accurately define molecules from a distance & then work out which car they came from? Any results would be rather open to discussion, I think!
If they can, at least it will mean that the star-trek transporter system is just round the corner. Always thought one of those would be nice

Yup, found it:

Sorry, still don't know how to make a link!

Looks to me like it would only detect particulates, i.e. diesels.
If they carry this through, it could mean the end to buses as public transport

I really can't believe this cr@p. How would they measure emissions on a windy day? How would they know if the cat was fully warmed up or not? how would they differentiate between older and new cars - have somebody sitting gawping at pictures of number plates all day? How would they know what emissions belonged to what car in a line of traffic? Why don't they do something to ease traffic flow and cut emissions that way? Why don't the whole damned lot of them **** off and tackle crime - or is that too difficult? GRRRRR

RaymondH

You echo my thoughts exactly..........I feel the police are using these tricks as easy money instead of getting our faith back into them by fighting things that really matter.......

At the moment I shall be pulled without an emissions test thing due to th elovely plumes of smoke exitting my exhaust so if anyone can help please post on my thread..........

Michelle.

Road side test have been tried before nearby in Bristol by the Council(NOT LASER?!?)but proved to be a complete failure - I believe all the fines had to be paid back!

I'm sure there will be a Solicitor somewhere that'll kick it out when taken to Court....!

Anyone heard any more about these photographic speed cameras in cats eyes?

Do they sniff as well....?
