You will need:
6 speed box
shift mechanism/box cross member
Propshaft
Rear diff would be needed depending on diff ratio in box.
If you get a R180 diff matching the box you must get the Type R drive shafts.hubs/brakes complete.
These are rare, very much in demand by the rally boys etc so are mega $$$ if you find them.
Many run easy R160 rears with the right diff ratio (usually 3.9:1)

Stacks of info if you search '6 speed gearbox' in Drivetrain section.
Have fun!

what exactly is maga $$$???
I've a version 5 type r and I'm trying to decide the best direction to take the transmission. My next power upgrade will probably fubar the standard box and it would help to know what the parts are worth i.e. keep them and uprate the gearset or sell it and put the money towards a 6 speed.

The STi type R rear end is exactly correct for this conversion. From 1997 onwards, it is all R180 kit.
So the 6 speed conversion will need to be:
6 speed box, 6 speed propshaft, selector linkage, the original Xmember will do Ok, - no strict need to change it.
An R180 rear diff of 3.9 ratio is needed [ JDM STi 7 / 8/ 9 etc ] ALL 6 speed boxes have 3.9 ratio front Final drives, but as usual the Euro ones have 1.1 : 1 drop gears and a 3.545 rear diff. The JDM 6 speed is 1:1 drop gears, thus you need a 3.9 rear diff.
There may be an issue with rear driveshafts not matching the rear diff but that will depend upon which year of R180 3.9 rear diff you buy. You will need to check before you fit. OR you can put the diff middle from the type R diff into the ' new ' rear diff and then reuse the original driveshafts.
Once or twice we have experienced a non alignment of the prop to diff flange. Some 5 times if I remember, out of 35 or so sales. Dunno why, but a simple re-drill of the bolt holes fixes it.
If you want it breaking down further call me.

In that case you need all the driveshafts, hubs, brakes, etc. from a type R with the R180 back end. BUT Type R has a plated LSD and the 6 speed 3.9 rear has a 'suretrack' rear diff [ lsd ] and my understanding is that the drive shaft , where it goes into the suretrack or Plated LSD is different.
Someone my correct me, but that is how I understand it. in whch case you may need to make up a shaft using the shaft and outer CV from a typre R and the inner Cv from the 6 speed diff.
It'll be cheaper to fit a 3.9 R160 as it will go straight in no messing.

If I understand you right, Graham, you took the hubs and cv-joints from an STI V7 and the shafts of your STI V4?!
I have got a UK/european STI 6 speedbox with the 3.54 reardiff.
So I would only need the hubs and cv-joints and stick the MY00 axles into...?

Can anyone confirm or tell me the truth?!
I have got a UK/european STI 6 speedbox with the 3.54 reardiff.
So I would only need the hubs and cv-joints and stick the MY00 axles into...?
And of course I want to stay with the WRX 2pots in the rear!

There is the problem!
I do not have the old diff any longer, as I swapped to STI V5 gearbox and now have got a 4.44 reardiff!![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
But I have got the R180 diff with the 6speeder, so I want to use it as well.
