MY '98 UK car. Starts OK, (so far), but when I release the key, it makes a sort of metallic squawk from the starter, almost as if the ring gear is sticking.
Does this sound,
a) expensive, and
b) terminal as far as starting is concerned?

The starter pinion is not clearing the ring gear quick enough. Take out the starter motor, clean the spindle to let the pinion spin back freely.
My wifes Pimera has been doing this for at least 3 years! The starter on that is a pig to remove, and yes, I've had the "If it was yours, you would have done it ages ago" quite a few times!

Don't forget to disconnect the battery as you may short the starter out with your spanners whilst disconnecting the power leads, Frightens **** out of you & often ends with head buried in Bonnet
