Default Hello and advice on possible clutch issues

Firstly hello to you all. I have been reading this forum for a while and decided I should get my finger out and register so I did! Well done on one of the best fourms about.

Secondly I would like to ask for your views on a possible clutch problem I am having with my 2001 Subaru WRX (UK Car) with a PPP. Its got 61,000 on the clock with FSH and is treated very well.

The other day while pulling out onto the A1, the car seemed to lose all drive and the engine kept revving (ie like a slipping clutch should) finally once some speed was gained the car went ok but there was the smell of a burning clutch. Drove it home and spoke to my local dealer who reckoned it was a clutch and I should brace myself for a £600 bill (give or take). However after returning from a trip abroad I tried the car and it seems finem but there is the slightest smell of clutch again. Does it need fixed? Is it a clutch problem?
The car did on rare occassions judder a bit when I got to a junction but i just thought it was because it was cold? (naive I know)...

Any advice/observations is appreciated.

Happy new year to you all.

Drive in 5th at 50mph and then floor it, if it slips its fooked!! Or at a standstill put car in 3rd with the handbrake on and ease up the clutch if it comes all the way out its fooked if it stalls its ok!

They can slip now and then if your thrashing it, but if its slipped with moderate driving, its on its way out!

Prices of the clutch vary on what you want! but as for fitting, shouldnt cost more than £250!

Also, its good practice to get the flywheel skimmed when doing the clutch as that is the cause of judder!

Make sure if you're going for a standard replacement clutch that you buy an Exedy item these are by far the best standard replacement clutches.

You should be able to source a new clutch for around £150.

This is what i found after a quick look, it should be a bit cheaper from your local motor factors.

Clutch

Check you local motor factors, Exedy clutches also come boxed up as LuK and Borg & Beck clutches.(There may be more brands that use them just open the box and check)

You can tell easily as they have exedy printed on the friction plate and stamped on the clutch cover.

Cool Clutch update

I tried those test and the car passed both. No slip at all and the car stalled.

Maybe it healed itself?

There was a slight burning but smelt like brakes rather than clutch.

I guess I will keep drinving it till it breaks.....???

The clutch is probably still on its way out - but only just starting to go. Mine had the same symptoms. Just drive the car until it gets to the point where you want it changed.
