Question

Does anyone have any experience of using a UK gearbox in an STI... I fancy a 2 door STI5, but would like long gearing (motorway driving etc). Is the UK box as strong as the Jap ones? Is the swap easy? Please tell me this is a sensible modification, does the car still feel fast?

Thanks

Jon

Thumbs up

The main gears of the STI V box are the same as the UK car - there is no evidence that I can source that suggests they are different. Part numbers are the same as the Jap part numbers, the cross-reference matches too.

The main differnces are final drive and the drop gears.

Why not go for a four door STi V the gearing is fine in that car - 4000rpm is about 89mph.

Isn't most of the gearing difference down to the diff ratios?

I'm prepared to be wrong here BTW!

Don't forget that you'll also need a matching rear differential, and possibly driveshafts..

if you want to get longer gears all you need to do is to get longer diffs. quaife do them for around £500 each. you will need to change both the front diff inside the gear box and the rear diff. also you can just get some 3.9 diffs of a UK MY99 car ( sti type R 4.44) however if the car you want is a type R which have no ABS and adjustable centre diff, i think it also uses different ( thicker drive shafts ) so that will need to be replaced as well .

or yo can do what trout said and just replace the gear set.

more than one way of doing things as usual all depending on your budget and how long can you stay with out your car

Happy,

you are correct to be not 100% sure.

the 3rd and 4th gear sets come as a single part - which is the same for the UK are as it is the STi. The P1 gears may be different however, I ain't checked.

Cheers.
