I know that this subject has been aired before and I apologize unreservedly for raising it again BUT it is seriously spoiling my ownership of my Impreza MY98 STi version IV 5 door. H E L P !!!!!!

The symptoms are as follows:-

I have had the car for 10 months (9000 genuine miles on the clock at purchase) and for the first 6 months it always ran beautifully at any speed. The one day .....

During normal, gentle driving, the car behaves impeccably

Driving hard, the car is rapid and silky smooth (hmmmmm ... I love it!) very very impressive at all times

Driving at moderate speed for a while or driving hard for a short period of time followed by slow driving (for example 5 miles on the motorway followed by s slow drive on a town road after pulling off the motorway, the car behaves like a dog on LIGHT throttle loads, particularly between 2500 and 3000RPM - it is most unpleasant to drive in town or round a roundabout after a fast drive!! At about 3000RPM, it is as though someone has turned off the 'dirty switch' and it goes silky smooth again. Likewise, pedal to the floor between 2500 and 3000, it scorches off.

After a somewhat longer motorway drive, the region of poor running will extend to about 3500RPM and then again all is silky smooth.

I have had the vacuum valve and pipework cleaned out. I have started using Shell Optimax in an attempt to improve matters. After 3 tankfulls of Optimax, I carried out an ECU Reset (green to green, black to black connectors under the dash) - ALL TO NO AVAIL.

I do not see the need for a 'Link ECU', surely the one that STi supplied should be good enough (it was for 6 months!)? There MUST be an explanation and cure but any technician who drives it only takes it 'up the road' or 'into town' and this is not enough to generate the problem.

Sorry to go on and on and on ....... but it really is starting to get to me!! Any advice greatly appreciated, please. Is there a company out there (Subaru will not touch it as it is a grey import) who could be relied on to resolve it without selling me a new ECU, exhaust system, induction kit etc etc..?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Steve

Has the oil been changed redcently ? Could be the wastegate solenoid needs cleaning out, this problem can be caused by having the oil level too high. It should be about half way between the marks, up to the top mark is too much.

There are plenty of independent subaru specialists who can help maintain your car, and are probably cheaper than subaru themselves. Have a look on the www.sidc.co.uk site for links to them.
