Why has my check engine light come on?
#1
Not driving hard it has just come on while driving home 3 miles. This is the first time it has come on and the car is 18 months old with 20000miles on it. What could the problem be? (When I turned the engine off and back on again it didn't come back on but I don't want to blow anything up.

Then it's probably the ECU thinking it's a cat failure - because it isn't there any more. This is a known problem to hundreds of us, and the fix is now available. Where did you get the downpipe from?

The exhaust is a mongoose full system and has been on the car from new. Its a model year 00 not the new shape. This has never hapend befor. I've checked all fluid levels and they are fine. Is it safe to drive or do I need to do what the manual says and take it to a dealer to rip me off. Thats if I can find one open.
Thanks for the reply Dave.
More replys please everyone as I want to go for a blast.

Light came on my uk300, dealer changed prodrive ecu. Seems ok now but only just had it done. The fix you talk about Dave, is it sensor from Scoobysport? as I would like to know.
P.S. fault came up a different problem each time checked, but never cat fault.

Is it using a little too much fuel??????????????
Mine came on last month, went down Scoobysport and had the car plugged into their Diagnostic unit, faulty 02 (lambda) sensor is faulty, will be changing it in the new year.It only takes 5 mins and they will charge you a bargain £10 ish for the trouble.

Refitted the K&N cone and just did 20 miles of different driving and it didn't come on so it was hopefully just a gremlin. Thanks for the replies. Phoned a mate who had he's check light come on, he went to a Subaru dealer and was told £200 for some sensor only for the light to come on two weeks later. So I'm glad I didn't have to go to a dealer.

Sorry, didn't read the post properly - the engine light problem with the downpipe is confined to the MY01. Suggest you get your local friendly dealer to plug their select monitor in and see if it has recorded the fault code.

Yes, was referring to the MY01 "420" fault code. Pete now has the gizmos in stock.
