From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?
Face it standard Scoobys are slow... boring, crap and slow..
This is why we modify them..
Mine is completely standard at the moment apart from 4pots 16" wheels and braided brake lines..
Thing is I want to modify it, but I dont want to spend money to just be wasting it later.. I am aiming for about 300bhp but more torque than power, as I dont do track days, or if I do I dont care if I win... (basically I drive it on the road.. Fast!)
So I want to get my car to silly power.. (standard 94uk 5dr turbo 61k miles)...
Questions..
If I buy a K&N cone airfilter at the moment and then add a Front mounted intercooler... will the airfilter still fit.. Is this the best filter to get??
What turbo is on my car as standard... and do I need to replace it with these vf22 vf23 things.. (Im sure someone told me early impreza's had a bigger turbo)
If I buy a full scoobysport exhaust inc downpipe will it be ok... some people mention 3" / 3.5" downpipes... Can I put this on the car with the air filter now and let the standard ecu sort the fueling..
What is the problem with the fuel rails on impreza's?
Are the fuel pump and injectors up to the job..
What front mounted intercoolers are available... does the radiator need replacing... has anyone ever put water spray and fans on an intercooler.... I also read about turning the inlet manifold around to shorten the hose length... has anyone done this?? Can these go onto a standard engine... (ie can I fit air filter, exhaust... turbo's, intercooler... and drive it somewhere on a standard ecu??)
Basically I can fit everything myself and would rather do this than pay someone to do it... I just cant tune cars...
And obviously a Link Ecu and a tune by brd or similar.. (and Lambda and knocklink..)
Possibly water injection as well... Can the link control this and water spray??
What else would you recommend apart from suspension..
Clutch is brand new... so would wait for it to die.. unless I get gearbox rebuilt whilst doing this...
Or should I also but some new pistons at the same time?? and what are the cost of new (uprated pistons??)

David,
that's a lot of questions.
First question I would ask is how healthy is the engine?
Start point would be a to have the engine checked out before embarking on a tune that merely accelerates a tired engine failure.
Does the car burn oil?
Is the compression still strong?
You are also talking about a range of things that can have very different results, and different expense attached to them. 300bhp from an early UK car is a lot - although still possible.
The main areas will be to uprate the turbo, intercooler and exhaust systems. You will need an ECU to control fueling, boost and ignition, otherwise you will be wasting your money.
You also talk about pistons, which on their own will do nothing for you - however if you rebuild the engine - you will be able to strengthen it, and run much higher boost - and invest with confidence to get an easy 300bhp+ However the latter option will cost in excess of ten grand all in.
For that kind of money you may want to start with a later car as a base...
...this merely scratches the surface of your question - so you will need to think what you really want to achieve and what is realistic for your budget.

What you need to do is visit ScoobySport. Pete has bankrupted me over the last year and must be looking for a new source of income
Only joking Pete
Back to the question, you need to establish first what exactly you want from the car, then work backwards to what is required to be done to achieve that, and talk to people like ScoobySport/Bob Rawle etc that can help you achieve it.

By reading posts on this bbs... I have decided that there are other things I can do to get power from my car... previous cars would have been exhaust, air filter, cam, head work, chip..
Where as with the scoob, I cant really just wind the boost up, so when I modify the car (not all at once...) I want to make sure im not wasting the money to only have to replace the parts later... for example samco hoses, if I am never going to increase the boost with my standard intercooler... which looks like it has seen better days... so might as well spend the money on an uprated one... but why spend xxx on a subaru when I could buy a front mounted intercooler...
Basically what I want is a fast acellerating (cant spell!) car that doesnt have too much lag.. and is still driveable every day..
300 bhp was just one figure that came into my head... 260 upwards... engine is quite healthy... havent tested compression ratio... looks too much like hard work to get to the spark plugs! doesnt burn oil.. (not that I have noticed yet!)
Fair enough I can add an exhaust and air filter... but If I but the air filter do I have to bin it when I get fmic??
Any more comments / ideas?

I think he needs help big time!
Since 2001 all he's done is weld a few tubes together, welded the body rust (the only Impreza with rust?) and stuck a turbo in the weirdest place possible.
And spent nearly all his bonuses.
Yep, in the pub with Pat and Steve leading him astray...
Bad news is the original thread content is still around on Snet.

Hehehe, thought you guys would like that ( not sure about Mr. Wallis! ) but found it when searching for any info on radiator/cooling problems !!
Thought it should be ressurected .... I think my first long thread read was the Wallis home made FMIC thread, a year or so after this thread! Set me off the wibbly wobbly modding way, to the current 400 hp/350+ lbft wagon!
I had a pinhole in the radiator, a new blueprint one was picked up today for £150 and an hour's work sorted that .. easiest job I have done on the Scooby! Apart from the air bleeding..!!!!
ohh well, back on me head!
