Excuse my ignorance but is there anyway to translate these figures into a rough mph guide?
146kW(200bhp) Torque 332Nm (246lbft)
My next door neigbour has just had his Golf 1.8T 'chipped' and was bragging to me as we both stood on the driveway this morning!
Can he now keep up with a MY01 or is he talking **** again?

Talking

The golf's rather a heavy beast. Even though the torque is impressive, the V6 4Motion puts out the same bhp and is slower that the MY01 (although it is 4wheel drive and the 1.8T isn't).

Continue to make gestures at him (of the 2 finger variety). Then remind him that not all roads are straight, he'll go away!

Hmmmm..... the standard 1.8T produces a lot of torque low down, so I suspect his Golf will be pretty quick on real roads.....in the dry and if they're not too twisty.....

The Golf TDi PD 130 produces almost as much torque (228lb ft @ 1900rpm), and according to Autocar it matches the V6 4motion from 30-70mph. Having said this, we're talking 7.8s for the Golf's against 5.8s for the WRX. Game over player one!

Once you've proved the point, why not mention a few days later how you 'struggled' ever so slightly to keep up with a diesel Golf, you know one of those new PD 150 ones...... this is bound to wind him up thinking a diesel's quicker than his car.....

Cheers
Tim

My mate has had a similar chip on his Ibiza 20vt - he was able to keep up with me in a straight line from approx. 20-110mph.
My car was standard at the time. (MY98 uk)
I've since added a full s/sport ex. + K&N 57i...He hasn't tried to "compare" performance since.

Yes, but the Golf carries more lard than the Seat - about 150Kg more......

Buy an old shape turbo and put a boost controller on it and then run 270 lbft or more depending on the RR and see how he likes that.

Have a look at the multitude of Dawes threads in Drivetrain I have spent the last few weeks wittering on about. http://www.dawesdevices.com/boost.html

In short, decat, use a quiet backbox - if you want it needn't be noisy, then take a Dawes controller (£26 in group buy recently) and drill out the hole in its side to 2mm (takes 2 minutes to do). Fit the Dawes (takes 5 mins). Now drive about at wide open throttle in 4th gear and screw in the Dawes until you reach your desired boost level. For safety also fit a Knock and or Lambda Link or similar or run your car on a Select monitor or Rolling road to check all is well (easiest option). In choosing a boost level I would go 1-2 PSI below your fuel cut.

I reckon this will give you about 270lbft and a much flatter torque curve. You will suddenly find yourself being able to embarrass much more impressive cars

Cheers John. Fully decatted luckily. Printing this off and will be bending Steve Lawson's ear about helping and setting it up.

Give the 'ole Star Destroyer a bit of a boost.

Don't know if Steve would approve. It is a bit unconventional, and none of the respected big boys on here - Pat, Bob Rawle, Pete Croney, Steve Lawson et al have made any comments about our little ball-spring devices. Would be nice to hear what they think.

Red face

My previous car was a Golf 1.8t Had it for 4 weeks, if that gives an idea of how impressed with it I was..

I had a VR6 before, liked the look of the new Golf, the test drive was OK, but even driving it home I knew I'd made a mistake.

The final straw was being beaten off the lights by a 2.0l 16v Vectra A week later the golf was traded back to the garage (Only lost £500 on it ) along came MY00 driving heaven again!
