I would also like to know this. I have also have an MY00 and it has a nasty shudder when cold. Goes away after about 5 minutes of driving. Only done 14000miles. This is my second Impreza and the clutches all seem to be dodgy.

It probably depends on the dealer; I had mine done at Cheam Motors. Their process (and I suspect this has been determined by IM) was that I had to agree before hand to pay for the work if the warranty claim was unsuccessful (this would have been quite expensive approx £800?). They then take the clutch out of the car and measure the thickness of the remaining friction material. AFAIK, there was no road-test of the judder, but I believe it is obvious from the physical inspection if you suffer from the problem (I think it gets warped). If the friction material thickness is within acceptable limits (and these must be quite fair, as my car had done around 27k miles, although it would depend on your driving style) they will then replace the clutch, and I think the bell-housing and maybe flywheel if it's damaged.
Not sure what the policy is with non-UK dealers.
