Gear ratios?

I need to know the difference in gear ratio of a diesel and petrol engined Escort Mk4.
Have just come tho change the gear box and it would appear the scrap yard have given me a petrol box, and they do not have a diesel one, need to get it all finished this weekend. Does anyone know if I could put the petrol gearbox on the car and that it would run?
The splines are the same size on the clutcvh and on the drive shafts and the casing is the same, it will fit, but will it run with the diesel engine?
