Some new figures on dyno site illustrate just how tricky it is to tell if a Prodrive ECU gives any benefit at the same boost as a standard ECU.
Firstly only runs 2 and 3 are on the same day and seem to favour the Prodrive ECU. However, whilst we can assume the boost was similar because an EBC was used, we don't know the effects of intercooler heatsoak along with whether the Std ECU was just finding its parameters after just being put in. There are probably other variables as well.
Runs 4 and 5 are on different days, and it just goes to show that comparing differences of <20bhp or lbft between cars is very difficult on a rolling road.
The errors on these curves from all sources have to be way bigger than any effect making it a pretty useless assessment overall?

It is tricky alright. I'll give a real life example but I'm not sure if it can be related.
I have the Standard ECU with a Blitz DSBC, running 1.17 bar peak. Also included is the APS cold air induction kit and a 5 Zigen exhaust, that is, mid section (catless mid) and backbox. No detting on the knocklink. I have not taken it to a RR yet so I have no figures
I had a run with a friend of mine who had the PPP performance pack, with the Magnex twin downpipe, the HKS exhaust manifold and the APS induction kit. He got 281 hp on the RR.
We had a rolling start and he did get the start on me by about 3/4 of a car length. I managed to gain on him slightly in first, then in second I was up to about a 1/4 car length behind, and then at the end of third I was ahead by about 1/4 car length and half way through 4th gear we backed off but I could not see how far ahead I was coz of the blind spot of the panel between rear window and back windscreen as he was on my right. Remember the steering wheel is on the left here. He said that he could not have driven any better than he did, that is, he missed no gears etc and that it was a fair run. It was good while it lasted, coz now he would kick my s$$e with his new mods, Motec, VF29, GGR exhaust, APEX EBC, plus more.
So I don't know if this is anything to go by. He did have the PPP and better breathing mods than me, unless that Japanese 5 Zigen exhaust I have is that good. Although he may have been restricted with his back half PPP exhaust. I probably had better boost control, but run no more than 1.17 bar which is 16.9 psi boost. I don't know what the fuelling was or is like compared to the PPP but there is no detting showing on the Knocklink.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

I suppose to have been able to compare properly you would need a case where my friend could have had my mods but with the PPP. That is for me to have my mods and the standard ECU and for him to have had my mods, but with the PPP ECU instead.

Your extra boost at the top end over PPP all other things being equal would probably be the thing that pulled you away. On the PPP it drops much more sharply than it would with a boost controller.

I agree John, the extra boost up top is what would have done it.
My m8 has the Motec M48 Pro along with the Apex EBC, I can't remember model number but it is the latest and top of the range model. I too asked why not the Motec alone and he said that the tuning shop told him that boost is controlled better with the seperate boost controller and that they tune the ECU to suit. There was a bit of info on this on 22B bbs.

the second run will always be lower than the first. basically when the car is first put on the rollers is quite nice and cold but then you it is taken on full load like that things get hot. there is not really that much air to cool the car in the dyno ( closed space, no moving air etc..). i remember booking the dyno for couple of hours to set up the car when we started the power was 250bhp at the start, by the end after 5-6 goes it went down to 230bhp!!! virtually the same car here!!!!
if you think about logically you would think the standard ECU should be better than the PPP ecu at the high boost levels. if they have wanted to make it a bit safer then they would have reduced the timing at the top compared to standard to make it safe. that is assuming that they have mapped it. however they have not done any mapping just raising the boost level then they should be exactly the same.
any ecu,PPP, MOTEC, LINK, etc... is really going to give you the exactly same results at the end of the day. the ecu just allows you to adjust the paremeters and the loading points. so it really all depends on who much you are really wanting to push the envolope but all ecu if mapped by the same guy on the same engine should give very similar results.
