md321 vs single plate clutch
Hi,
I plan to move up to a MD321T soon, however my clutch has gone now so I need to fit a clutch that will deal with the expected load of the bigger turbo.
Will any of the uprated single plate clutches be good enough or is this turbo too much for them and I would be better going for a twin plate?
Its a road car however I plan a few runs up the pod.
Cheers
Dan

David now has an uprated Exedy plate for 500bhp x high torque he tells me.
Burns: might like to ask for a ride in your 2.5 soon if that is OK?
Looks like I will be going in the 2.5/MD321 direction/ppg.

Well I will tell you after the weekend as its now mapped on a 2.5ltr, its only running 1.5 bar due to probs (sort them next eyar ) but its still hitting 480/480 and it's on the same single plate clutch
Mine isn't just any single plate clutch as I sourced it from the USA to cope with big power!!

sorry to hear you having problems steve, still I am sure you will survive on 480 during the slippery months ahead
anyone an idea of the lifetime of a twin plate clutch used mainly for road at around 450/450? Can you rebuild them to some extent as well?

The AP Racing Organic Uprated single plate clutch is quite capable of operating at 500 bhp and dealing with numerous drag starts. I would be surprised if David does not have a similar offering from Exedy and I am sure there will be several others, single plate suitable for high torque application.
Twin plate on 2 litre sounds like overkill to me and unless it is a high torque example of the 2.5 then a twin plate is probably not needed.

It's torque that kills clutches, not power. If you look at the spec sheets of clutches they never quote BHP, they quote Torque.
A lot of the big power cars dont produce anything like the midrange torque equivilent of an eficient smaller turbo with the power gained at high rpm. You could have a single plate that is adequate at 500BHP, but show it 400lbft and it may slip.

Thanks for the input guys, I forgot to mention mine is a 2.5 and the plan is for some thing around 400lbft. So I have decided to take the safer (more expensive) route and go for the twin plate.

The Mrs drives the car most of the time so will be interesting to see what she makes of it. I am not going to warn/tell her that it may be a bit harder to use etc and see if she complains about it, should be a good test of how different it is to use

I ended up replacing them with a used Exedy uprated organic and went on to do almost 20,000 miles on it at the same power.
I currently have a single plate paddle clutch that i bought off a member on here and its coping with a rotated gt30r fed 2.5 quite nicely.
Here's a pic of it.
Would be nice if anyone could tell me what make it is if they recognise it.

Have to disagree with you there Harvey. I had two AP uprated organic racing clutches and ripped the centre's out of both of them at around 380ft/lbs.

I run a single plate AP organic with 380lb ft and have done 100+ 7k rev launches and 100+ tyre clean burn outs on Super soft hillclimb slicks and it has never let me down.

mine is an ACT clutch not sure which one as the company who supplied it recommened it to me! But I'm going twin plate next year as I'm going for a gt35/42 turbo and my clutch is only rated to 500lbs. I don't want to take a chance on this clutch as if it goes I won't be able to get my car started

It was stinking a bit at the last meeting of the season so I think it's on it's way out.

Clutch has arrived now just got to fit it.
I intend to do it myself but never having fitted a twin plate before is there any special trick to doing them? I am thinking it would be easier if I can get hold of a main shaft (not sure what the proper technical name is) from a broken gearbox and use that to align the splines and center it?

AP organic is comfortable at over 400lbs+ - I know I've had the same one on since 2001!! (albeit its only done about 30k miles and about 15 track days). I dont waste my time on 1/4 mile runs though...
Cant believe someone mentioned a ceramic plate...... Jesus - had one they are a nightmare in traffic and moving the car forward in 1st
