had gearbox oil changed today to see what the craic was. basically a fast pithced grining noise in 3rd, 4th and mainly 5th which is VERY audiable in the cabin doing motorway speeds.
a good mate of mine dropped in some castrol syntrax 75w-90 i got on here from a gruop buy.
anywho, he loosens the plug/bolt/lug (whatever its called) and lets the oil drain out.
seemed pretty clean, but was due replacing. seemed to think they may have been a little too much in, but couldnt tell. anyways, the metal bolt thing is magnatised (learn something new everyday), and it was infested with quite a lot of metal particles, sharp little buggers...ouch.
he made a joke that if that was his car, hed be crying now, and i then realised its rebuild time
but, the car seems to be on its original gearbox (a.f.a.i.k.) @ 134,000 miles (second engine though), so not a bad innings really.
right, im gonna have to save up for this i can tell, and will look into it in the new year. if possible, id like suggestions on who to call that arent silly expensive. some general advice and expereinces. heard good things about zen performance.
prices???
thats gonna scare me i know it
hoping to get the car upto a safe 300-330bhp to run on standard internals, so hoping a standard build would be sufficient. (car is a my99 uk turbo by the way)
so as above, any info, experiences, prices, suggestions of where to go...anything useful really.

Got My PPG built from Zen and it was a top quality build, a standard build shouldn't be too expensive, but until the box is stripped to see what it needs you won't really know.
However Zen would get my vote anyway, best bet is to contact them and get it booked in to be looked at... They may also be able to give you a better indication of Prices and ballpark figures.

Just had my P1's gearbox rebuilt at Zen with the PPG kit and all I can say is they are all complete gents. Explained everything in full, as there were slight problems but that was with the previous builders fault not Zen's, and gave me my options. So opted for the full kit, gears 1-4. Think they should be able to do a rebuild using uprated sti internals for about £900 which will be strong enough for your power or you could bite the bullet like I did and pay £2800 for the PPG kit but with that comes the peace of mind that no matter what power you go for in the future the box will take it.

£2800 for expert work seems a good price. all i want is a standard build, as the car has a lot of miles, and i dont want ridiculous power for fear of harming other parts. il have to get in touch and have a chat over the blower.
i guess that id get it booked in and then let them fix it regardless the damage.

dont wanna stick it on the credit card and be paying interest for the rest of my life.
i may try a couple companies, as a quick google search brought up zen and i had a wonder on their site. pretty informative.
i may ring up scoobyclinic (although expensive, great workmanship), api, and even scoobybits. see if jason has any contacts. although i would prefer to drop the car off somewhere, and know its not getting shipped elsewhere to be fixed.
do gearboxes come with a warrantee?

API did mine, I had a recon box on an exchange basis
From memory it was £550 for the box and £200 to fit so £750 plus Vat but that was two years ago and it might of gone up by then.
Only took a couple of hours to drop and fit the new box.

for what you want i wouldn't bother with the cost of a ppg kit, a rebuild should be ok or a later model 6 speeder, which will be cheaper than the ppg build

Shame you don't have access to a ramp etc, my gearbox rebuild cost me 230 quid inc the new oil, 3 new selectors and the 2 damaged gears (used off Zen). I dropped it off on the Tuesday and picked it up Thursday night and put it back in the day after.

if im looking at a bill around £800-900 it may be a while before i can afford it.

I would expect though, that a PPG 5 speeder would pass muster at the insurance because it is still a 5 speeder, whereas a 6 speed is a definite change of spec. I no need to mention anything having been done to the 5 speed....
Call for a sensible chat if you wish.

We keep all PPG gears and parts in stock too, you know. We can build anything you need to any spec and ratios and possibly supply a 6 speeder too if that suits..
