rear diff noises
hey,
iv type r and when i got it,
it had a compitition rear diff, ie very tight.
had to change it as it was eating clutches.
and very noisy, whining and clunky in 4x4
but have a 2nd hand one in it now,
and it kinda the same but not as loud and not as tight,
are they all the same?
or would i be better to get a rebuild?
how much would this be?

The plated LSD in the R180 size of the type R can be set to a preload on building, mega tight for competition driving etc.
The plates wear and the tightness eases off with use, but will still clunk etc. The juddering will be worse with the dccd wound on, and at it's minimum with the dccd in fully open mode.
A rebuild on a diff delivered out of the car would be about 2 hours lab iirc.
You need to use the right oil in it too. Have you done that?
David at Welcome to the API website did mine and Rob, his transmission expert will sort it easy to suit road/race whatever you need, and advise on oil.
