Dawes set-up
#1
I've been following the Dawes discussions for some time - it seems to me that the fiddling is slowing down & the 'best' set-up has been reached. Well, for now, anyway. The thing is I'm not too sure where everyone has ended up? Which is the non-peaky place to put the thing?
Which is the bit in the many threads to follow so I don't end up doing everything Anyone written it up on a web-site yet?
Ta for any help.

Turbo nipple to wastegate with bleed hole increased to 1.5mm on a MY99/00 works best - adjust to 16 PSI on original ECU, 18 PSI on Prodrive ECU in 4th/5th gear. Disconnect the pipe to the solenoid and cap it off with a screw in the end. Remove the T-piece as well. Also remove the original hose off the turbo nipple (with restrictor inside) and replace with the grey hose you get with the Dawes, but swap the end it is fitted to and shorten it as much as you can.
Clear as mud.
This is "The Best (TM)" setup.

do you just stick any screw that will fit then and will it go back on if you remove the Dawes. I have to admit that a summary on your web site might save you time in the long run and clear some of the confusion from multiple threads. I bet you'll be able to cut and paste most of it won't you? Go on Go on Go on Go on......oh shi** my self assesment.

Much better
I'll have a bash at The Best (TM) & then start to catch up with the The Latest (TM) which will undoubtedly be Much Better (TM) by the time I get it done.
While I'm here, has anyone other than the one post I found somewhere found that the improved/posh/expensive/overpriced version of the device doesn't overboost without the hole drilled out?

Any screw will do of the right size that is a snug but not a stupidly tight fit and it goes back on afterwards. The expensive version may peak slightly less, but will give excessively brisk spool up on part throttle with the small turbo IMHO, and the bleed virtually cures this.

nom,
Try it without the hole drilled first, i got the slightly more expensive one without any drilling and does not overshoot at all.
I think it also depends what breathing mods you have, if you have a fully decatted free flowing exhaust (i think as per Johns set up) there is more tendency to overboost. If your running a standard downpipe (as I am) it dampens the spool up and you may not get any overboost.

Look out for part throttle full boost issues though. This was the reason I added the bleed not because of overshoot (this was a happy side effect). In 5th gear at 3500RPM I could have the same boost and performance and by moving my right foot just change the exhaust note and the air fuel ratio from 5 to 8% CO! Just imagine the EGTs. Also it makes it more sane to drive on bends. I just could not confidently throw the throttle about out of bends before the bleed like I can now.

OK - I'm getting the posh version that's meant to control itself better, but have the de-cat exhaust (the possible upset mentioned). I'll try it without the hole first & see what happens - rather harder to un-drill a hole than make one in the first place
Thanks for all the help guys!

I don't know what has happened, i posted a reply and then it vanished??
anyway, I can't get the pictures that HarryBoy posted, don't know if they have gone permanently. I want them because i want to verify what the solenoid is.
Can someone please explain if this is correct.
existing setup
wastegate--T----nipple (whats this the turbo out?)
................|
................solenoid
and if so
dawes setup
wastegate----dawes---nipple (same as above)
screw

thanks for your patience.

I have just received my Dawes and was wondering why it is suggested to increase the size of the bleed hole? (will I need to do this?)I am running a standard uk MY96 (awaiting a Revolution exhaust - centre pipe & rear box - and K&N panel filter before fitting the Dawes). Should I be worried about runnnig lean? (I had intended to limit boost to 1 bar currently 0.8)
thanks for your help

On a MY96 leave the bleed hole alone. I would just put it on - need not wait for your breathing mods, but I would get your car checked on a Select monitor or in some other way for fuelling, ignition advance. Boost gauge is mandatory.
I don't know where fuel cut is on MY96, but 1.0 bar may be it. Why not post and ask in Drivetrain a new thread.

According to You and Your Impreza Turbo by Haynes, which was proof read by Pete Croney and Mike Tuckwood, the fuel cut on MY99+ is around 1.25 bar and the pre 99 cars was 1.0 bar as John says.
