Can you advice me on the cost of fitting a downpipe at a garage from which it has not been bought?

We had quotes around 130.00 pounds + vat, can we get it cheeper?
We live in North London.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks Kate

Had mine fitted at a local garage, £40 including mid-section.

Needed a bit of modification to a mount with a welder.

It only takes a couple of hours if you know what you are doing.

I live in Devon though, cheap labour

Dowser, you did it yourself?

That's what my hubby thought of doing... how long did it take you?

BTW thanks for your replies, I won't take it for 130 quid !!!

It is possible to do it yourself (eh Trout ), however, be aware that if you snap a turbo stud, you will be in trouble...

When I had my first de-cat DP fitted, it too 4.5 hours just to get the old one off of the turbo!!! They ended up having to cut it off with a torch! It then too 1/2 hours to fit the whole of the new system on!

It is a fairly striaght forward job, but remember, if it is an OEM DP you are taking off, it has been there for quite a while and may be a bit of a pain....

hmm not something I would want to try myself as its very tricky with the studs on the turbo.. you have to be VERY carefull. Len did a great job on mine and it wasn't worth skinnin my nuckles and wasting a day

Cool

Ditto what the others have said. I had mine fitted by Steve Lawson who has done hundreds if not thousands and it still took ages due to the studs breaking. You also need to trim the heatshield to accomodate the larger pipe, something that Steve accomplished in seconds due to his vast experience but could result in a few tears being shed otherwise (well it would've if I'd tried to do it myself )

My advice would be to get it done by a professional unless you have a large supply of spare studs on hand

steve lawson is a very experienced long term subaru mechainc who used to work for cheam motors (probably for the majority of my life )

He is based in surrey and is probably the most knowedgible subaru mechanic available to the community.

Long life will charge you 120, but that encludes the downpipe as well

Seem to remember a while back Halfords were doing free fitting on Magnex exhausts (incl. D/pipes.) . Might be worth giving your local branch a ring to see what their prices are like now? Loads of people on here took the offer up but it was quite a while ago now.

Did the one on my last scoob, about 2 hours, heat shield was the biggest pain, but it ain't rocket science! Let it cool down, a good soaking of the bolts with WD40 and away you go.

Thumbs up

Just for the record I fitted my Scorpion D/P myself recently.

I left the studs soaked in WD40 for 2 days as a precaution and hey preso none of them snapped. I do have the luxury of a garage pit but, for the average DIY skilled person, It's not a hard job at all, you just need a bit of patience and common sense. Took me 5 hours in all with very rewarding results.

I also remember someone telling me that Halfords did it for free if you bought the product there, but I think it was just an introductionary offer as they have no idea what I was talking about when I rang them up........

Thanks anyway for all your advice.

Yeah - Halfords were offering fitting of all tuning products free for a while until they encountered the Scooby downpipe......older ones do take up to 4 hours as my new fitting centre is about to find out......
