After 98 the caseing and phase 2 engine block designs changed thus the 8 bolts and 2 dowels apparantly stronger all together ,But you can drill and tap them if you like ive been running an "8 bolt box" for a few years now on a phase 1.5 np's

I had no trouble lining up all the holes but if you drill and tap your bell housing you could use extra fixings thats all..It maybe stronger ?

I put a 2005 box onto a 1994 block, it bolted straight up no probs. Had to tap the bell housing to take the second fixing for the starter motor, M12 I used if I recall, also had to open out the hole on the starter motor so the M12 bolt went through.
