Well after no warning other than 10-20secs of whine then a loud bang (like a grenade going off), followed by clattering and not being able to move the gear lever i reckon my box is fooked.
After stopping the engine i seem to be able to select all gears. Then i can slowly move forward under power but gear lever nigh on solid!!!!!!
The clutch still works though.
Obviously another box is reqd as i reckon the internals will be past repair, whats the going rate for recon/2nd hand.
1995wrx btw.
Will have a better idea of damage at the weekend as it will be coming out so ill split it to see the mess.
My first guess is a bearing has failed, but its only a guess atm.
Cant see it being the power or abuse thats killed it as i dont launch it and i'm not running big power just 1.1bar boost with a chip and a late model sti i/cooler doubt if im even near 280-290bhp
Great start to the week.

My last car went trough 2 gearbox's,first time i got a full recon supplied and fitted for £795.second time,i got a second hand one, fitted it myself for £200.
You can pick them up for £150-200,and fitting around £150-200. No guantee of the condition of the box unless it's recond mind. Also, you might need a new clutch while the box's out.

The fitting is of no issue, easy done.
It will also have a clutch while out.
Just weighing up the risk of buying a dud box 2nd hand as there are far too many dodgy people in the Subaru game.
Will have to phone around the specialists as soon as its out i reckon, I just wanted a feeling on price from the folks on here.
I can feel a weekend at work coming on to pay for this, bummer.......!

Can't really say which lasted longer,as the first went when i went down the 2.5 route, second when i fitted a paddle clutch(never again, pig to drive),so i kind of deserved it both times!

Mine blew up last year, stripped second gear.
Replaced it with a later TY754 box from AS Performance. IIRC mines a UK box, with my jap diffs.
Like mentioned already, mine was about 900 all in, inc new clutch.

Well dropped the oil, to my surprise its totally clean i expected all sorts floating around in it.
Looks terminal tough as a couple of teeth where stuck to the magnet.

Possibly stripped a gear.
Might it not be better to get yours rebuilt?
The gearbox before the one that blew up properly was notchy going into 5th, dropped the oil and there was 2 or 3 teeth stuck the the plug.
At the time, thought it better to get the box changed, in hindsight should have ran it until I blew it up properly as it wasn't noisy or anything.
