When upshifting from 2nd to 3rd, with reasonably high revs, does it crunch. I have this and have had since having it built, I have been told this is normal, but it just sounds wrong.
Just wanted to know if it is common accross the board.

The problem is that PPG uses the old style single piece 3rd gear synchro ring and it was never a strong piece of kit. That is why Subaru re-engineered that 3rd ring to a 2 piece version from 1998 boxes onwards. 2nd gear was updated to double cone in 1994 for the same reason. That fixes the inherent synchro problem on 2nd & 3rd gear.
But PPG have made their gears to the pre 98 style and we have to go back and fit old style rings that are weaker than any of us would wish.
The only real solution is regular replacement of 3rd gear ring if it keeps on happening. Better that, than damage a PPG gear and have to buy a new 3rd / 4th gear set.
