Default anyone know this diff?

removed from a friends jdm who it was too locked for his liking so he put a legacy diff in. He has 37 tooth crown wheel, is this normal for jdm?

Looks like a cusco rs or mz. In which case it has a three way setting depending on lock up required. This diff will wine and also clunk on light take of etc, but is great fun when set up correct.

More photos will be good.

Take a look here L.S.D. type-RS / type-MZ English page CUSCO

So that is the Cusco RS type with initial torque provided by the dinky little springs you can see. And it looks to be set on the one way setting which I presume is the lightest.

It is a good bit of kit and will work well in the appropriate motor car.

Unfortuantely if your nate doesn't like it none of the other settings will be any better. Is that a rear diff or a front?

37 teeth means 4.1 ratio 9 on the pinion 37 on the crown wheel Do the maths.

Good Luck David APi

As david has mentioned, its set up on 1 way, this should make it more drivable for the road. The Clutch lay out will also affect the lock up, ie wet dry wet dry, or two wet two dry set up, if you follow what i mean.

I use this diff on my own car set to 1.5 way with 100% on the clutches, and find it ok for the road, a little clunky on take of but then its not a daily driver. With these diffs you really need to set for driver style, but the 1 way setting you have is a good start, even if its set 100% on the plates, but it is worth stripping to check this before you install.

Check the link above you can see the digram, 10 disks each side. You have three ways to set these up iirc 100% lock up 80% lock up and 60%. You need to split the diff to check the order if you want to change this.

Briefly, you can change the resistance in the lsd by reducing the area of friction. If you go wet, dry, wet, dry, wet, dry in sequence that gives you the largest area of plate to plate contact.

If you set it up : wet, wet, wet, dry, dry, dry by matching the wets and the drys together you reduce friction area.

Simples !

Actually NOT on a front LSD, as it will mean gearbox out and strip every time you want to alter the tension.

Rear diffs are easier and less work to fiddle about with.

Trust me, it is the same one as the info in post 4 above. It may be a later version , but it is the same thing.

Jimes; UK boxes have open front diffs. So, NO it won't have a front lsd.

Even so it is rare to have any sort of LSD in the front of a car. Try hanging onto the opposite wheel and see how much effort it takes to prevent it turning. If not much it is probably a free diff [ just the oil drag ] If it has any tensionthen it will try to turn and then with effort slip, But as soon as you stop and try again you'll need to overcome the tension.

A bit difficult to get the point of that across BUT, do you follow me??

thanks David I see what you mean...........my gearbox code says that i have dccd but no control is fitted, box is from later car so i guess they didnt bother with control. Would it be worth fitting control, not sure how it works, electro magnet i guess?

Neetronics in the USA make a control box to work them as after market conversions. Apparently not hard to fit etc.

But you need to find out if you actually have a dccd still attached to the box. it may state VB1CA on the label but the rear end where the dccd is housed are totally interchangeable. The dccd type has a flat alloy cover on the rear of the box, at the top, with a grommet and wires coming from within. definitely a jack and a torch job.................

Some retro conversions have wires coming through the regular steel plate of a non dccd box. That usually leaks like the Titanic, so should be easy to tell.

Good luck - David
