6 speed or expensive Scoobyclinic gears the only option ?
I have been reading MANY posts and so far i'm under the impression that the ONLY way to cope with more torque in a MY99 Turbo is either to invest in a 6 speed or upgrade the 5 speed with the expensive gearsset from Scoobyclinic.
Is this true or am i missing any other options that don't directly break the bank ?
P.s. the car is modified but i'm NOT aiming for the fastest Scooby in Europe.

True, very true but we all know that when your aiming for about 400 Bhp and 500+NM torque that the 5 speed can let you down at any minute.
It's not like all gearboxed died just because people rape shifted them.
Sometimes they die when the car loses traction and then when traction comes back the sudden torque jolt can be too much.
Sometimes it's out of your control and your left with a crippled gearbox.
So, i was just wondering if some people have found alternatives to the previously mentioned options ?

a genuine 400hp car with 400 ft lb of torque on a five speed? this is not an "if" scenario but a "when" scenario. 3rd or 4th will be shredded in no time.
Possible solutions. full 6 speed drive train including hubs and half shafts or a PPG gear set. A sequential shifter might also help but is not necessary. sorry mate no quick fixes here. you bite the bullet and spend the money. it is a false economy to keep throwing 5 speed boxes at a car with this much power.

And legally where your from....
The 5 speed gearkits are expensive but i suppose you would be getting a brand new built box with better ratios over the six speed. And then the added weight of the 6 speed is not ideal but at least its adding weight in the right place...
I opted for a secondhand dccd 6 speed in the end after hearing of the breakages with the PPG kits.
The clinics helical gearkit was not available at the time though....

Hi Dutch.
I am running a 5 speed wrx hawkeye. I have stayed with the hawkeye 5 speed to keep weight down, But had a dog engagement gear set made from Elite, I'v used dog engagement as there is a lot more gear tooth than on the syncro gear as the synco takes up a good third of the gear, I will be running 450 bhp 450 t. the gear kit I had made is a straight cut 1st and helical rest. the hawkeye casing is good for 450 / 500 bhp the gears are now good for 550 / 600 bhp. if you go 6 speed std dccd, it will be good but will start to fail in time, the extra weight will slow you.
the gear set I'v got cost a lot more than the scoobyclinic / elite syncro set, with it been dog engagement, car is also mapped for flat shift going up and auto blip throttle coming down..
I think I have a fantastic gearbox, only bettered by a sequential. others might think different. that's why we all have different cars, gearboxes, engines.
6 speed dccd is cheaper. even with rear diff and shafts.

Thanks for the info guys !
I keep hearing you guys about the added weight, is it such an issue ? How much is added in total ?
Hm, maybe the Scooby Clinic gears would be the better choice in the long run, especially since i'll completely rebuild it.
Maybe a Groupbuy could shave off some hundred quid.
Thanks again.

What's the skinny on those better gear ratio's ? Do the ratio's on a 6 speed have a drawback ?
Normally you'd think that 6 speeds would offer performance gear ratio's and 1 overdrive gear (#6 speed).
I must say that the 5 speed rebuild with the SC gears sounds better the longer i think about it.
I'm familiar with the 5 speed dogbox's but those are very expensive, far from smooth to shift gears and too noisy, not really streetable in my honest opinion.

I don't mind the dog engagment. But dog is clunky, there is a whine from the box. but when you give it some and you want to rip through the gears, thats when its comes to life + flat shifting is ace.
The 5 speed will still top out at 170, so I'v been told, and beleave me that is fast enough I would of thought
If you go for the 6 speed and still want to save the 30 kg there are many other areas where you can.

From: Slowly rebuilding the kit of bits into a car...
Sadly the six speed was spec'd for the Group N rally boys, it has the same top gear ratio as a five speed ( near enough), but has an extra gear in the middle.
Un-limited mine would top out at 195 mph....

Been out with you in yours dunx, I would of past out with fear way way before that.
A very fast car, and its got the correct bits bolted to it.
Dutch. on what you have said on here, power wise, ect, If I was you I think I would go for 6 speed DCCD with rear diff and shafts. for what you want.

Bigsinky, Yes a very fast car for daily driving, i have no race aspirations whatsoever.
Didn't expect the SC gears to be far from a comfortable shifter so that's a no go.
Good point in shaving off some weight in order to compensate for the extra 30 Kg's that comes with the 6 speed.

i shaved a helluva lot more than 30KG when i stripped my car out. the seats alone where probably 30KG (well not far from it, they are really heavy). all the interior removed. 2 competition seats, sound proofing removed. changed the standard STi suspension for AST coilovers and saved another load of weight on each corner. Going to look at perspex for the rear windows as the back doors will be permanently closed now. electric window motors will save another bit.
obviously not an everyday car now, and i have purchased a big lazy V8 to run about in.
