Overboost. How does it start to happen?
#2
I have had my MY98 for 3 years and never had this problem up until the last couple of weeks. The only different thing I have done to my recently is started to fill up with Optimax. I have had a look at all of the pipes going to the boost solenoid and they all look ok. Why should I suddenly start to have this problem? The car is going really well except for the occasional sudden cut out.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Could it be my boost solenoid playing up. I have connected the two green connectors under the dash and turned the ignition on and the solenoid repeatedly clicks. Does this mean its ok? Or could it be something else.
Any replies would be much appreciated.

Brake cleaner can be sprayed through the solenoid with it cycling. But otherwise it sounds like the higher octane. The turbo spools up quicker and peaks higher and it catches the control system out. You can change restrictors to sort it out. I believe MY98 is similar to MY99/00 in which case a larger restrictor of 1.3mm instead of 1.2mm should sort it out. Precision drill set or the dealer can do it. I think it was MY97 and before which had a different restrictor configuration in which the hole needed to be made smaller as it is sited differently. I'm sure someone will correct as necessary what I have written.

Thanks for the reply John
Can I buy a larger restrictor from the dealer?
If not where do you get precision drill bits from?
Also can it be done with a hand drill with the restrictor in a vice or does it have to be done with a bench drill to keep it more precise as I dont have one of these.
Thanks Stuart

You can also buy a valve to do it. Maplin do a precision drill set. You can just manage without a vice if you use a low power drill, a pair of pliers to hold the victim and rest it all on a Maplin catalogue

Try running it on sul instead of optimax, if it cures it, then there's yer problem. Had the same, overboosting in 5th only, using optimax and just fitted a d/p. Had to adjust the boost controller an now everthings hunky dorey.

If I increase the size of the restrictor by 0.1 mm will it change the way the car drives? Will it go even faster? Or does it just stop the sudden cutting out caused by overboosting and change nothing else.
Thanks Stuart

Thanks for everyones replys
I went to Maplins and bought some precision drill bits but they only went up in size by .2mm. I put the 1mm bit into the restrictor hole and it went in and there was a bit of movement. I then tried the 1.2mm and it wouldnt go into the hole so I assume my restrictor was set to 1.1mm. I have drilled it out with the 1.2mm bit and will give it a try later. It was very easy as you said John.
