As it's not getting faster with the revs, stick it up on a jack.
Could be something could be touching the front prop or pulleys.
Either that or there could be a problem in the wheel bearing, brake area.
Jack it up and have a nosey

Whilst driving home i noticed a faint knocking sound coming from my engine <RB5>. SO I pulled in to a service station to check the oil.levels were low so i topped up with oil even though it sounded like something was loose <was hopeing so> . Engine started up ok so i took it easy and drove home <5 more miles>. the noise is now really bad . how bad is it guys ???

How low was the oil? If it was off the dipstick low, you could well have major problems First port of call would be the bottom end. And depending on how far you drove it could well have starved other vital components.
Best to get it checked out ASAP as you may do further damage.

Edited cos I can't spell

1 litre is fine.
As the knocking doesn't get faster with engine revs it has to be transmission or wheel or brake or something like that
Can't be a problem with your engine internals

As Callum says 1 litre of oil below the max mark is fine
And if I cast my mind back to my college days all those years ago in motor vehicle technology, we were told that an engine only requires a third of the amount of oil of what it actually holds to perform (though I'm sure you're dealer wont agree)
So hopefully it's not engine related
