Default Gearbox help needed now grrr lol on a 98 uk turbo

Hi all well this morning ive noticed my car makes a rather loud whine in 1st gear and 1st gear only. is this a common noise on this car or is it sign of gearbox about to give up the ghost, doesnt make a single noise in any other gear that ive noticed and drives lovely did notice its hard to get into first gear some times as well but fine in all other gears.

if its the gearbox on the way out, whats my best option as far as getting it fixed or replaced goes? Second hand gear box ( may be faulty again )

recon gear box
Uprated gear box maybe to a different scooby box?

and what sort of prices am i looking at including fitting etc, cheers guys and girls.
