MY01 power upgrade checklist
#1
Having read many of the posts over the last few months, I am none the wiser as to the power gains each particular upgrade would likely contribute. If I wanted to increase the pwr on my std MY01 to say 280bhp, which mods should I concider - does anyone have a definitive checklist of must have's ?
I suspect it is not that simple, for example could I simply upgrade the turbo unit and get the extra gains all in one swoop, or do I have to take an incremental approach and U/G the ECU, zorst, induction etc etc ?
I think newbies like myself would realy appreciate/benefit from a checklist of upgrades with approx power gains, BHP gained/£ cost spent, for each component - all in one place!
That would be realy useful, it seems a shame that all this collective info out there is not being fed into a "tuning bible" that could be used as a reference document.
Any takers?

I'm also aiming for roughly the same bhp figure. My bhp upgrade plan is:
TSL BB, SS u/p, SS centre, Magnex d/p, itg panel filter,
unichip ecu plus all the brake upgrades, fluid upgrades, extra cooling, BIG wing to keep it all together.

Ive gone down the PPP route - £1600 gets you 245bhp and bagggggssss more torque than a full exhaust system
Warrenty was an issue for me - so im going to at a later date (ie warrenty runs out) decat the thing to get approx 280bhp.
You could however get a full decat exhaust and then a Link / Motec (if anyones successfully done one on the MY01 yet) and go for pretty much the same - plus its mapped to your liking.
Loads of options - but id recommend a PPP as a first step.

You're not going to get 280bhp from a PPP + full decat. Scott Parker has a full decat (SS inc up-pipe), PPP, Ported Headers and a fuel controller and he's got about 289(ish).
APS do a good kit where you get uprated top mounted Intercooler, full APS exhaust and Unichip which I think gives you about 280-290. It's quite a bit cheaper than the other route too I think.

I beg to differ, as mentioned above 3 MY01's all ran more than 280 at the PE RR day, my MY01 PPP + scoobysport de-cat got 285bhp and 258lb/ft.

thanx very much guys, much food for though here...
DT - I like your logic regarding the APS kit, you have been down the exact road I am trying to avoid! The fit and forget proven route definitely appeals to me. I've had a quick look at the URL you gave, but no mention of UK dealers/specialists..
anyone recommend a good source for the APS kit/installer down South ?
thanx again everyone...

Last time I went to PerformanceExhausts, I saw the name APS.
I send an email and was answered that the APS full exhaust with sport cat was 840 inc. VAT + shipping and 180 for the dual BOV.
Verrrry far less from P.E.

The 280HP APS solution is $3700 AU roughly divide by three to get a UK cost. To that you have to add VAT shipping and fitting over here - about a days labour I guess. around £2-2500 I guess. APS were in the UK last week talking to various folks about becoming a UK distributor. Don't know yet which have got deals, but Jamie Whitfield is taking orders at the mo for a bulk buy. If you are buying small items you will save, as transport and banking costs are high relative to the cost of say an induction kit. However, if you are buying the full kit I would get a quote from them for importing direct and compare.

Forgot to mention I hope all you MY01 owners have told your insurance company that you have upped the power from 215bhp to 285bhp thats about 33% increase in engine power I am sure that would affect the premiums .

Chrisp, I've been in two and can vouch for the fact that they go like stink compared to my fully decatted 01 WRX. BIG difference, I have no problem believing the figs. Mine is now at 265bhp (different Rolling Road) with a Unichip added boosting at 1.1 and much quicker than it was with just the decat, but not as quick as the decatted PPP's.
We are taking it slowly with mine due to the locally made FMIC I have, which is a bit of an unknown quantity - looks crap on the rollers but good on the road. When I have boost up to say 1.25 bar I would expect the performance to be about the 285 mark too.

chisp, attached are the results for the day, note the UK STI 264bhp just about what Subaru claim!!, all cars tested same day, same rolling road, same operators. Figures may not be right? BUT Power Engineerings road had just been calibrated prior to this event, and their road is the one most people on here seem to quote figures from. Either way i'm happy with my car.

Still cant see how a PPP which prodrive say will give you about 30 bhp (and has a part decat) plus another decat section is going to give you another 40 bhp on top. Sounds very dubious to me. Yes I can believe perhaps close to 280 with a fuel/boost computer and FMIC on top. Then again after you have done that lot your warranty is screwed an dits cost you so you may as well have brought a grey import in the first place and started with more bhp.

Your not that good at maths are you Crisp
If you look at standard 01 PPP's they are getting around 255bhp, a full decat removing the very restrictive up & downpipes gives about 25bhp, then add a bit of octane and ITG and 285bhp seems about right
Scott
p.s with PPP figures bhp is up but torque is down compared to Prodrives claims

Sorry guys (simon), I stand corrected. I didn't think you could quite get to 280 with those mods but I obviously remember the figures incorrectly.
I was on that day and I'm convinced that the figures were accurate due to the changes I had made to my car were what I was expecting and my M8's Elise 111S got exactly what it says on the tin ( ) at 143bhp.
Whilst Jamie @ Perf Exhausts is talking about becoming the APS distributor, it's not yet decided and APS will be appointing one (hopefully) in the next few weeks. I have heard that the Kit for the STi they are planning on selling will be very well priced!!!!!

Interesting to note the RR figures for torque:
It's does not seem that easy to get a std 220hp Scoob up to the torque that an STI produces, 270-odd lbft.
Several power figures however, are pushing 270hp . Shows how obviously restrictive the std exhausts are at high rpms. :confused

chaps chaps chaps,
Come on, take it easy. I was at that day (Matthew Collier) and my car got an expected 244bhp and 247 ft/lbs torque. Why? Well, 1st run @ PE in August, standard MY00 with just PPP BB, 1st tank of Optimax and about 5000 miles (still a little tight) got 221bhp and 208 torque. Same car in Feb on a bloody cold day with Optimax and about 7000 miles (still loosening up) 229bhp / 221ft-lbs. Added Dawes and upped boost from held 0.9 to 1.0bar and got 244bhp / 247ft-lbs. This seems about right to me.
My m8's RB5WR on the same day got 250bhp and 241ft-lbs which seems about right. Phil Attaway got 263 from a fully decatted, 50,000 miler MY97 running Optimax which does seem quite high but you'll note his torque is pretty low at 231 which is expected with just a full decat exhaust.
On the 1st run I did, there was a standard MY00 there which got 215 (book) and on the 3rd run (like I said), my m8's Elise 111S got 143bhp which is the quoted figure. I think that taking all this into account, the figures from that day (which is the day everyone is talking about) are pretty much accurate.
Moe's 336 or whatever he got and Trout's 340 or whatever he got are in the correct ball park too for the mods they have done. They have both run @ PE many times and the results they get are very consistent.

Well only a muppet would post the figures without telling people the cars have been modded .
Okay I give up you are all right and I am wrong I shall leave drivetrain alone, never to return. Obviously I know nothing . Important though dont forget to tell the insurance about 33% power increase.

There is a quite simple way to sort this. Bring what you run to the next Rolling road meet and put it up against a PPP Full decat 01 and see how it goes. Its obvious you dont want to get beaten by an 01 as you state you sit on the Pre bug eyed, side of the fence. So until you see it with your own eyes I dont think your ever going to accept it.
