Default Serious Rear Diff Problem, Help please???

Hi all

In soem serious need of help,

I have a 2.0 gl impreza wagon, its a 2000 w reg,

Recently brought it with a v loud rumble form what i figure is the rear diff, its making a sound like hell.

Over the past week it has got worse and worse now with a slight knocking but a seriously loud rumble far louder thing ive ever heared before, you literally have to shout over it.

There is also a whine starting from what sounds like the gear box although it changes gears smoothly. But it has also tnihgt started to handle oddly, might just be me but it doesnt feel safe.

Im thinking the rear diff is shot, as it sounds like tis about to explode but i am no mechanic, unfortunatly im living up on a tiny island north of shetland and no good local garage about.

So need advice, some one has offered me a second hand diff for £25 that they say is fine, so questions are.

1, how easy is it to change the rear diff shafts over, and how,

2, does any one have any ideas what it might be if it is not the diff and i am only guesing,

3, any other advice would be greatfully recived.

im a bit bugered with this but as the rest of the car is great im not wanting to just scrap it.

Hope soemone can help out with advice,

Mnay thanks clint.

if you do replace it make sure its the correct ratio. easy to replace if you can get it off the ground but i should imagine its a bitch trying to do under the car

hi sounds like a rear wheel bearing to me,my osr knocked as it was so rough the bearing actually locked up when spun after i pressed the old bearing out. get it into a garage who can check the bearings first before you go down the diff route bud,

edit just reread that no garage about, jack it up on solid LEVEL ground and with the handbrake off gently rotate the wheel back and forth as far as the diff will allow and check to see if the bearing feels rough or the wheel has lots of movement top to bottom in and out if you grab the wheel at six and twelve o clock ,check both rears one at a time
