Rear Knock that isnt struts or diff

02 STI uk Suffered with noises since I had it last sept. first it was rear shocks so had them replaced. At the same time as service my diff was diagnosed as having a problem (knocking and said he could feel resistence in the wheels) they didn't have one in stock so I had to leave it for a while.
I then took it to a local specialist just to have oil dropped out to confirm suspicions, tiny copper looking fragments were found in oil and I was told that diff looked like it needed replaceing. I eventually found an 06 sti diff with the same ratio as mine (3.545) with only 100 miles on it
only thing different was that the flange to the prop shaft was a different size but not a problem as that was swapped with my old one. I called to check with the first garage just to check it was a like for like replacement and to book it in, they told me the half shafts wouldnt fit and that the 06 was a different size
and that they would re-check their stock and get back to me, they didnt bother calling back
. It measured exactly the same and was the same ratio so couldnt see a problem with fitment. Because of that I asked Pole Position their thoughts and was told it would fit fine and they could fit it straight away along with front discs and pads and alot cheaper than I had been quoted.
Since having it fitted at low speed mainly reverse and pulling away I still have a clacking/knock!!!!!!![Mad](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/mad.gif)
Can anyone shed some light on it as I have spent a small fortune on so called specialists to diagnose problems with the exception of pole position, who I didnt ask to diagnose the problem as it had already been diagnosed correctly twice before hand (so I thought).
I have chosen not to name certain garages as I understand noises are a nightmare to track down and me swapping garages probably hasnt helped matters (just couldnt seem to find a specialist I was happy with) so I dont feel it fair to soil a businesses name.
Many, many, many thanks in advance.
Andy

I had the noise as well and read about someone that sprayed their strut legs with white lithium grease. Since this costs £6 and a bit of time jacking the car up I had a crack at it. I carried this out by cleaning of any dirt first and then making a tiny hole in the dust cover boot for the spray straw to go into. My boot wasnt making a sealed contact with the leg so I've adjusted the folds to not retract fully and stay longer in length.
I soaked each leg with spray over a hour and use the whole 3-1 tin. I can honestly say the noise went and hasnt return for about 6 weeks. Its a quick and cheap fix and may help you diagonse further your issue.

Something I found on my hawkeye was that the plastic cover on the middle rear seat belt rattles. Under the parcel shelf, in the boot. Sorted with a few blobs of silicone mastic.

Have you checked the rear bushes ? I had something similar on my last scooby which turned out to be nothing more than a cheap plastic bush (about £23 each) located behind the suspension.

Yeah I have thought about them, pads look ok but not keen on the idea of stripping them off to look at the back of the disc myself just in case I pull half the thread out of the brembos. Its going in again by the weekend so ill get them to check it out. Thanks.

Is your back seat secured properly? I put my car in for a walbro fuel pump to be fitted and the garage didn't secure the back seat backrest properly. Was making a lot of noise. Got home and found the securing Point wasn't in properly. Just tightened it up and the noise is gone.

I bet all of my money on it that it is the rear diff support mounting plate is bent.
I had this problem with my car, somebody had used the retaining plate as a jacking point when working on my car, and it turned out too be a very expensive problem too find and fix!
i changed the suspension, anti roll bars, drop lings, discs pads and brake shoes trying too find and solve the problem!!
only did i notice one day when i had the car over the it that the lip on the retaining plate was bent up at the edge and was therefor knocking against the diff support everytime i put load onto the rear diff (gear changes, pulling away and going over bumps)
See the link below for a picture of the area which i am referring too...

Hope this is your problem chap ;-)
I solved it by just bending the plate back with a pry bar ;-)

Is this the knock you are getting ( at 7sec and 10sec )
http://www.streetfire.net/video/sti-...ick_103490.htm
Ive got the same and am very interested if you find what the cause is.
I've got a new STI reinforced dif mount HERE and kartboy diff outrigger bushes HERE to go on soon in an attempt to solve this mysterious clunk.

I will let you know if any of the new bits I've got fix it. Spent last weekend rebuilding the rear shocks ( fitting grease nipples etc ) and replacing the rear anti roll bar bushes and droplinks only for the noise to remain.

Mine only does it if I drive slowly in reverse ( such as parking or turning car around ). Also does it on 4th to 3rd downshift. Doesnt do it when pulling away going forwards.

As the weekend was a washout I was not able to fit the outrigger bush spacers.
However, my car was at GBH Motorsport today for a cambelt change and to fit the new rear diff mount.
Bob at GBH tells me that the cause of the clonking is the outrigger bushes themselves, one has perished.
I have ordered up some Powerflex items and will book the car in to have them fitted. It is quite an involved job but so long as it solves the clonk I'm happy.
For reference, the failed bush(es) are item 6 in the pic below

Might be worth having yours checked out and see if the same thing is causing your clonk ??

Well I had the rear outrigger bushes done and the knocking has pretty much gone. I also had the Sti reinforced diff mount fitted a the same time. I now only get a slight knocking noise when turning around etc. which is mentioned in the manual and is considered normal and may be made slightly worse by the STI mount.
Overall I am happy that it is fixed

I bought my Powerflex bushes from ebay, I dont have a link as I am on my work PC.
There are two different part numbers for left and right bushes. A lot of places online list 2 x left part number only which is incorrect according to Powerflex website.
The part numbers for my 2006 Car were PFR69-118 for left and PFR69-124 for right , looks like the same parts should fit your car but check on Powerflex website..
Cost was about £45 for both including next day signed for postage.
The part PFR69-124 has a thick and thin end, the thick end goes at the bottom ( it will make sense when you see it ).
It cost £260 to have them fitted if you wanted an idea of costs etc.
