1993 Legacy Turbo (7k on recon engine)
I have got a tappet noise when starting from cold. As soon as the engine gets warm this noise subsides. I have changed the oil and filter in a hope that this will help but it still does it. Is there anything that I can do to stop it? Is it just a common trait of the engine?

Unless the recon engine has new lifters it will make this noise, where did you get the recon from

 

The engine had been changed prior to purchasing the car. I believe the engine was reconditioned at Silverstone?
When I picked up the car it had done 1k on this engine. As far as I am aware it is a std engine?

 

Standard noise from these engines I'm afraid - mine doesn't bother me - can't hear it anyway cos exhaust and turbine totally drowns it out!

 

ditto, stereo + exhaust drowns out mine

have you tried thicker oil, plus there is an additive about thats meant to work (don't think it does though)
