How much torque can the standard UK MY00 clutch cope with?

How long is a piece of string?
What about the gearbox?
Just wanting some ideas as to how far to go - I think these may limit me first?
300 lbft for both if we say Power Engineering figures? Or is that asking for trouble?
Is the STi gearbox/clutch and stronger?

Hi John
I think generally it's reckoned they're good for around 270-280lbft of torque - beyond that and you're starting to push your luck (or limit your clutch life ). I think when you get to around 300lbft people do seem to eat clutches, and fit uprated ones (e.g AP, Helical, etc).
How much do you reckon you're running with your Dawes kit?
Cheers
Richard

hi John,
my car uses the same engine/clutch as the my00.
i fitted full 3" mongoose, pipercross filter, and fuel cut raiser/bleed valve. this was done months back with a fairly new clutch (genuine part). as soon as it was running 1.1bar, it started slipping loads in mid range 3rd/4th/5th gear.
dont know how much use this info is (prob not much ) as it wasnt on a rolling road.
ian
p.s. now runs 1.4bar with AP clutch

I think it depends a lot on how you treat the clutch. If you try a high revving clutch slipping 1st gear start then you are asking for trouble. If the clutch is fully engaged before full throttle, it can take a lot more.
My std. clutch has done 45,000 miles. It is fine at 312 lbft with sensible use. If I am very agressive in first though, it will overheat and slip. It's only done it once, and I was trying to get a record 0-60 !

agree with you there john about a gearbox failure following clutch change.
i think it was the bite of the AP that caused it on mine. changed from 1st to 2nd and let the clutch out v.quick.......BANG

Guys, I think it really does come down to how you dive. CraigH had about 360bhp and about 300-320ft/lbs of torque on his STi. He had an uprated clutch (AP I think) and a standard gearbox.
He did something like 30,000 miles in this trim (and sometimes more as this was running 1.5 bar and he often ran 1.8 bar ). In all that time, he had zero clutch and gearbox issues and this included countless track days, several timing sessions (including the 3.7 0-60 run) and the above mentioned mileage.
Now AFAIK, the STi gearbox is the same as the UK car, other than different ratios so I can't see the gearbox being a problem John (unless you really are talking a moster build m8 )
Matt
P.S. If I'm talking complete bollcks, hopefully, Craig will put me right

It seems that some people are luckier than others. My STi clutch started slipping as soon as I got over 300ftlbs, on PE's RR. 1st never caused a problem, but if I floored it in 4th/5th at circa 3500rpm, it just span..... It had only done 10k, and lasted another 20K + on Tim Whitesides car......until that started getting over 300ftlbs on PE's RR........

Matt,
That was the stock STi clutch. I then used an uprated STi (Japan) clutch, and it was fine.
You're right though, my driving is appalling......so the clutch slipping, may well be down to that
